About the Author
Patricia Cranton was affiliated with the University of New Brunswick in Canada and Teachers College, Columbia University in the United States. Patricia taught courses in transformative learning for 20 years, and wrote/edited several books, including The Handbook of Transformative Learning: Theory, Research and Practice (co-edited with Ed Taylor, 2012).

In 2014, she was inducted into the International Hall of Fame for Adult and Continuing Education. In 2016, Patricia Cranton was a recipient of the Order of Canada.

We deeply mourn the loss of author, teacher, and friend Patricia Cranton. An outstanding contributor to the fields of Adult and Higher Education, and to Transformative Learning in particular, she will live on through her work and in our memories.

Excellent classical based exercises that can make a good difference!

Hanon is a set of exercises in scales etc. that carried over from piano (to my knowledge). They look simple but increase in difficulty, Classic training, but stick with them and you will develop an ear that no lead guitarist will leave you lagging! I still play bad, but have gotten farther along on these exercises than anything else. My wife used Hanon exercises on her piano and plays beautiful classic pieces. I was trading licks with our lead guitarist and they looked at me and said, "You have been doing some serious practicing!"

I'm a beginning bass player. This book is actually beyond my current skill level, but even working just one measure at a time I can see where this is not only building up my left hand dexterity and strength, It is correcting some bad habits I was already picking up.
As a musician of many years, ( I'm not really a piano player, but I can do at least the first two exercises from the Hanon method for piano) I'm finding it to be indispensable to not only strengthening my fingers and building dexterity, but learning to make my fingering more efficient.

Starting with the first pages and waiting before moving to other parts is not recommended.

That's why Patricia Wells's updated guide, now in its fourth edition, is a hit. With detailed information on 450 restaurants, Wells takes readers by the hand and demystifies the culture so well known for its luscious food and demanding gourmands. Sidebars abound: she dissects breads, foie gras, and oysters--and even gives the cultural background on why the French may drink wine in the morning (to kill worms, of course), as well as discussing the pros and cons of eating the rinds of cheeses. Also listed are the best bakeries, cafés, and specialty shops, as well as 50 recipes to try at home.

If you take just one book to Paris, this is the one to pack

As I consider "Food Lovers Guide to Paris" an old friend, I was really pleased to see a timely update to one of the most useful travel books I know. I highly recommend it to anyone with a good appetite who is contemplating a visit to the City of Light.
In this fourth version of her classic, Ms Wells again does a superb job of ferreting out and reviewing top notch restaurants, cafes, bakeries, pastry shops, wine bars, candy makers, markets, and a myriad of specialty shops - anything and everything that has to do with food in the food capital of the world. Some notable names from the third edition have been dropped and some exciting new ones added.
Some restaurants have been in all four guides, but an update was certainly necessary for those who enjoy the finest of fine cuisine: three years ago, the celebrated superstar chef Joel Robuchon retired. Today, several of his talented former assistants are now running their own kitchens in Paris, and their food can be absolutely stunning. My girlfriend and I visited two of these restaurants last autumn, (during the wild mushroom season, of course!), and were blown away by the exquisite food at both establishments.
Those looking for dining bargains will not be disappointed, as a good many of the recommended restaurants are not only quite affordable, but also offer wonderful value for your money. Good food, simply but imaginatively prepared. Included amongst the latter are several wonderful regional restaurants, if, for instance, you would like to try some of the specialties of the Southwest or Provence.
As there are other serious restaurant guides available, perhaps the most uniquely useful chapters in the book are those devoted to specialty shops. Whether you are looking for fresh truffles, old cookbooks, designer china, or the most specialized and esoteric of cookware, using this book you will be able to find it.
As another reviewer pointed out that the book features a number of recipes (I think the reviewer was peeved by this), I thought I would add my two cents: every recipe I have tried from other editions of this book has been at least very good; some have been superb.
Finally, as usual, there there are many, many explanatory notes and a very good glossary that covers a large amount of French food terminology. First time visitors to Paris will find both the notes and the glossary VERY useful.

Good guide for food lovers

This is the only guide that I brought with me to Paris for my 2 months stay there. Here's what I like about this book:
1. The food dictionary on the back! Eventhough I can speak/write/read some French that I don't need to carry regular dictionary around, the food terms sometimes confusing and this book has an excellent section on it.
2. The recipes are worth trying. I tried her recipes for madeleine and financiers, both turned out excellent.
3. Ms. Wells not only give restaurant guides but also specialty shops, bakery, etc. Some of the recommendations are well secluded from mainstream tourists. A trully excellent find.
Here's what I don't like about this book:
1. Many of the restaurants featured are expensive, especially for 2 months stay in Paris. I think there's plenty of cheap and reasonably good food that I could find. I used Ms. Well's recommendation for weekends/special occasions.
2. I think this book is a bit too heavy/thick to carry around.

Perhaps Too Generous

Although I find her engaging, I have to admit my experience with Patricia Wells' guide books and recipes has been less than foolproof. Although this book contains a wealth of useful details, in my experience she is far too generous with many mediocre restaurants and I have had several meals I considered downright bad based on this book. Perhaps a part of the problem is that, unlike most restaurant reviewers, Ms. Wells is well-known and well-recognized among Parisian proprietors. She loves them, they love her. As a result, I suspect the service - and in some cases the food - are often a notch or so better for her than for the average patron.

A clear, crisp, relevant, and holy look at the Beatitudes

Jim Forest takes the reader on a thought-provoking journey by exploring the Beatidues as a whole and individually. Using examples from such diverse sources as the Desert Mothers and Fathers, Russian Orthodox saints, and contemorary peace and justice activists, he opens the Beatitudes in ways which allow readers to see their connection to our own times and lives. He does an especially good job delineating the meaning of words as they are used in the Beatitudes. A good resource for teachers, preachers, and anyone who wants a "new-old" way of looking at these basic teachings of Christ.

excellent commentary

For anyone, like me, whose ever read the Sermon on the Mount and thought, "wow, this sounds really beautiful, but what does Jesus really mean by this?", Forest provides an amazing discussion of these beatitudes, translating them from the eloquence of their Biblical language to the meat and potatoes of everyday life. This could can be read straight through, or one beatitude at a time, it's simple to read, yet challenging to live. I first read it in high school and read it years later and found I got even more out of it.

Treasure worthy of exploration...

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven... (Mt. 5:3-10)

How often we Orthodox sing these eight verses during Divine Liturgy during the first procession, when the Gospel book is carried out of the sanctuary into the nave and then back into the sanctuary to be placed on the altar. And why? They are beautiful verses; and yes, the Church undoubtedly hopes they will sink deeply into our hearts; but again, why these particular verses? Why so frequently? And why during this procession? They are preceded by the familiar words of the thief who was crucified with the Lord, "Remember us, O Lord, when Thou comest in Thy kingdom..." We recall that Jesus is not only our destination in the house of the Father, but that He is also our way of getting there. Another liturgical procession will follow shortly, when we, with all our concerns and all of creation symbolized in loaves of bread, will follow the same path to the same altar as the Church shows us what life is like for us, what it is about.

There are eight beatitudes--or perhaps only one revealed in eight aspects--telling what it means to live in the kingdom of God and how to do it. Forest presents it as a spiritual ladder that we ascend in order, rung by rung--a series of steps we make, none skipped--in company with the Holy Spirit: in a word, our deification. It is a preparation and a process that we must do. Without God, it would be impossible. In this teaching, Jesus shows us what to expect in the world--a true reality check. And He not only tells us how to deal with it, but how to be blessed--indeed, refashioned--by it. The Lord teaches in an economy of words how to live dynamically with Him so that we do not simply endure passively whatever happens to and around us, but that we join ourselves to His co-suffering love now--here and now--in concert with all the events of our lives, and thus prepare ourselves for God's eternal kingdom. We are on a journey, and, in a sense, we are mystically already there.

In an extended look at these eight verses, Forest brings a wide and delightful variety of stories, wisdom from the saints, and scripture to focus on the way our new humanity is fashioned by means of our collaboration (co-laboring) with God in this challenging ascent.

This is a book that greatly moves one's heart. I've yet to meet a Christian who hasn't thoroughly appreaciated this book. Jonathan Goforth was a great man of God, and this book touches on his insights into a true walk with Jesus Christ.

It is good to read a sober account of revival. God was really able to use the man (and his wife) to bring about growth. The principles here serve to remind us that God desires our whole, undivided heart.

An inspiring account of the way in which God used Jonathan Goforth's utter obedience and commitment to accomplish remarkable work in China. We can be sure that the results of that work are still present in today's China, having an impact on the growth of the Christian Church there, even though it was almost 100 years ago.
It was typical of the man's humility that he restricted this book to telling only of the work of God in revival, and said nothing of the enormous sacrifices and privations of himself and his family during their years in that country. He does mention the many who were martyred, which should be an inspiration to us as we live our comfortable lives.
