Still a classic discussion of chronic ennui

Kuhn's work has stood the test of time. The problem of chronic ennui is one of the most important issues facing our time. A silent malady of the soul traceable back to the Ancient Greeks Kuhn leaves us in no doubt that the apathy and sadness of this malady is not merely the product of our own period - though it seems to be much more pronounced in our own time. Prodigious research, immense stamina, the work took almost ten years to complete. A largely unknown classic. See also George Steiner's 'In Blue Beard's Castle', Sean Desmond Healy's 'Boredom self and Culture', and other texts on what Schopenhauer called 'the malady of the modern age'.As a PhD researcher on the topic I feel myself to be following in the footsteps of the master. A Favorite In My Kitchen

Jeff Smith has always been an influence on my cooking from the first time I saw him on television. I was very excited to get this book many, many years ago and it has been a staple in my kitchen ever since. This is a cookbook focused on using wine in virtually every recipe. That made it dear to my heart right away.
The book begins with an introduction where the author considers the properties of wine as food. He goes on to discuss romanticizing wine and concerns about alcohol. The introduction is, like all of Jeff Smith's writing, peppered (pun intended) with personal anecdotes that always bring a smile to the face.
The book then moves on to a section filled with cooking hints and tips. The author discusses various pieces of kitchen equipment, cooking terms and various definitions. A brief discussion of herbs follows, although I believe he could fill an entire book with this type of wisdom about the culinary use of herbs. The section is completed with information about the TV series and a few hints on entertaining.
The next chapter opens with another wonderful anecdote. Unlike many dry cookbooks, this one is filled with life and warm commentary. The author discusses wine and how it relates to history, theology, healing and cooking. This is no mere cookbook filled with indexed recipes and little else.
Finally, the recipes begin. The first section includes a variety of "tapas". 15 different tapa ideas are offered, although only 3 are actual recipes. 4 more appetizer recipes follow including a recipe for zucchini fritters that are simple and are simply out of this world.
A chapter on soups is next and opens with comments on adding wine. Simple instructions for making various stocks (without wine) are included. Mr. Smith includes a recipe for minestrone soup that, while challenging compared to many of the other recipes in the book, is beyond description. Recipes for various chowders and soups total 13 recipes in this chapter.
The next chapter deals with fish and shellfish and I must confess that I have rarely used recipes from this section. 11 recipes include one I have made. The scallops in cheese sauce was easy to make and tasted wonderful, although I was loathe to try it the first time.
The next chapter proves that wine and salad do 'go together'. A variety of simple dressing recipes even includes a recipe for mayonnaise. The 17 recipes include one for a tuna and potato salad in pesto that sounds odd but is delicious. A far cry from 'tuna helper'.
The next chapter moves through pasta, rice and dumplings. 12 pasta recipes and includes the sultry 'Hooker's Pasta'. Only 5 recipes wait in the rice section and the green rice recipe is a favorite at our table. Only 5 dumpling recipes follow but it was from this book that my dumpling making began. Semolina, polenta and German dumplings are all simple to make from the pages of this book.
Mr. Smith's well known love for poultry is well represented. Chicken is first with 10 recipes. I have used more than half of those recipes with some frequency. I think each recipe from this section has passed through my kitchen at one time. The 5 duck recipes have seen far less use. Duck is not popular in our house so it is hard to judge these recipes. Knowing Mr. Smith's talent I am certain they are perfect. Turkey rounds out the poultry with a single recipe I have yet to attempt.
The chapter on "confits" is next. Growing up we called this "potted meat". Only 6 recipes are offered, but they are in the true spirit of the 'frugal gourmet'.
Beef (8 recipes), pork (7 recipes), lamb (6 recipes, including 1 for curry powder) and even rabbit (5 recipes) are also covered. 4 marinades are offered. 8 recipes for sausage might not be the healthiest choice. Each recipe I have tried has been wonderful.
A small section about veggies includes 12 recipes. The carrots in vermouth is recommended by all of my friends. A short section about the eggplant includes 8 recipes. I would have easily ignored this section were it not for the television program that accompanied it. I was convinced to try something new and was rewarded with these recipes.
The next chapters deals with a topic near my stomach. The sauce recipes range from a basic brown sauce to a white cheese sauce that stirs my hunger even as I type. The tomato and garlic sauce is simple. It has served as the base for many other sauces I have created. 8 recipes in total offer sauces for most occasions.
4 recipes for "molded dishes" have held little interest for me, but the ice cream bombe is simple and fun. Never one to ignore simple aspects of life, Mr. Smith even includes 10 sandwich recipes and 3 for casseroles.
A short section on "tabletop cooking" (with 3 recipes) introduces a section on international cooking kicked off with China. The author introduces the basic concepts of the Chinese kitchen and the use of wine. The 10 recipes in the Chinese section are merely a prelude to the Chinese cooking series that was to come later.
A mere 6 recipes are found in the French section. That is surprising considering the wine theme. Perhaps so much had been said on the topic in other books. 10 recipes are found in the Italian section and the spareribs in gravy is recommended if you enjoy pork.
Though I am not a fan of Japanese food, I did find the 13 recipes interesting and have made several of the sauces from the book. A mere 4 Spanish recipes finish the international section.
10 recipes comprise the "wine specialties" sections. Such oddities as garlic wine and wine jellies are discussed. A section about coffee follows and includes 6 different recipes.
Finally desserts are discussed. After a two page discussion of the topic in general, the author dives in with 5 wine desserts and 6 ice cream recipes.
The conclusion of the book covers many aspects of wine selection, opening wine and other general wine tips. Although not a dedicated book about wine, some of the tips from this section were insightful.
My copy of this book is worn and dog eared which I consider a tribute to Mr. Smith's recipes and research. If you have never read a Jeff Smith book before, this is a perfect first choice. If you do not like wine you will still find many valuable ideas in the book. Those who do enjoy wine will find a new treat with every turn of the page.

About the Author

Cem Unsalan, Ph.D., has worked in signal and image processing for 15 years. After getting a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 2003, he started working at Yeditepe University, Turkey, where he established the DSP Lab and has been teaching microprocessors and digital signal processing courses for seven years. Dr. Unsalan has published 16 journal publications and has published four international books. He holds one patent.

H. Deniz Gurhan received his B.Sc. from Yeditepe University. He is pursuing a Ph.D. degree in digital signal processing and embedded systems at the same university and works in the DSP Laboratory.

Great Resource for the MSP430

This book is a rare gem. Most MCU programming books fall into one of two categories: the first is the general undergraduate sophomore/junior level digital design or embedded systems textbook which does some hand-waving at various MCU architectural aspects then shows some incomplete snippets of code related to accessing and manipulating those features. A good example would be "Embedded Systems, An Introduction Using the Renesas RX62N Microcontroller", it has some interesting info but not very practical for application or implementation of a product or design. The second category, which I find generally unhelpful, is a book like Jonathan W Valvano's Arm book which might be useful in conjunction with his course but has incomplete coding examples and a bunch of generic info that look like it came right out of the data sheet. In addition I dont like seeing pages of Assembly code examples. I dont know many engineers that spend much time writing in Assembly for real life applications. Older academics seem to love assembly coding as it reminds them of their old glory days.

What this book does so well is applying practical C programming to the MSP430 rev. 1.4 and rev 1.5 showing complete programs in C, and yes some assembly, and then explaining how the code works in the Code Composer environment. While Keil doesn't make non-Arm based free IDE's you could probably use IAR's free version of their IDE if you dont fancy CSS (but another Eclipse based plug in). The book also takes time explaining how to use the different features of the CSS IDE, that is very rare in itself, you are usually on your own with the IDE.

Some especially good points about this book are its one of the few teach yourself books suitable for the working engineer (or advanced Hobbyist who has moved passed the Arduino or Energia environments. While both authors are Turkish the English diction is fine with just occasional, innocuous, non-standard verbiage which doesn't really affect the overall quality of the book. Another outstanding feature is how meticulous and diligent the authors have been with providing functional code for version 1.4 and 1.5 of the MSP430. Unlike many books, their code works and compiles consistently and I've seen very few errors. The authors have obviously spent a lot of time making a very high quality, useful book of original material that is very useful in gaining competency in programming the MSP430, it's one of my rare engineering books thats done so well done I plan to read it cover to cover.

While the other reviews on this site are fairly accurate in terms of the quality of this book, and I have to agree with them in most part, I found one major problem. Barely any of the examples of code have comments. I mean, it's pretty much rule #1 to comment your own code when programming, not only so that you can remember what you did, but so that anyone else can figure it out. If you're trying to teach someone how to code from a book, then comments are even more necessary. If it wasn't for that, then this would definitely be a five star book.

Great book for learning MSP430. Easy to read. No errors in text!

I started reading this textbook a week ago and so far I have read the first 9 chapters of this book. I am learning the material on my own and I will base my review of the text on what I have read so far.

The book is easy to read. It is intended for undergraduate engineering students but you should be okay if you have knowledge of digital logic, C programming and Assembly language. I like how the example code is explained in detail and the layout of the textbook is nice too. The code is inline with the text and it makes it easy to read the text and look at the code without having to flip pages.

I am a recent BSEE/MSEE graduate and I had some knowledge of microcontrollers and assembly language prior to buying this textbook. When I took my course in microntrollers, I did not understand the subject too well. That is why I decided to buy this textbook along with the Launchpad so that I could be a better engineer and hopefully it will help me get hired. Previous knowledge of C and Assembly programming will help a lot. This being my second time around learning microcontrollers, I feel comfortable with the material so far.

The textbook uses TI's Code Composer Studio IDE. It is easy software to understand. It has a debug window and you can see the disassembly and monitor the values in the registers. There is an entire chapter dedicated to the IDE and it is helpful to get started with the software. Example code is available on the companion website and that makes it easy to follow along with the textbook while at the same time programming the board with the provided code. Each chapter contains problems but solutions are only available to faculty. It would be nice if solutions had been provided at the end of the book (like math textbooks) but I guess that would add several pages to the textbook. It is fun to work on the problems anyway. So far I have been successful with the problems I have attempted. Right now, I am stuck on a question that deals with Interrupts and Assembly language. Hopefully, I get it working within the next few hours so I can move on to the next question. I recommend doing the problems at the end of the chapter. They have not been too difficult yet but it will help you learn and better understand the material.

I want to mention that if your Launchpad is Rev.1.5 you need to enable the pull-up/pull-down resistors in each example code. The author mentions this in the text but it is easy to forget. I struggled for one day with my push button thinking that it would not work because it was always low. The solution was to set the bit to 1 in the P1REN register and set the appropriate bit in P1OUT to 1 as well. After that the code worked with my board. It appears that the code will work with the Rev.1.4 Launchpads without trouble. Some of the code does not take into account the switch bouncing (for Rev1.5 Launchpads) so the code might not work as is. For example, if I press the push button once, the MSP430 might see it pushed two or three times because of the switch bounce. The author also mentions that capacitors (used for hardware switch debouncing) were removed in Rev1.5 boards and that software delays can be implemented to deal with switch bouncing. Most of the example code does not contain delays to deal with this so you will have to work on that. I believe Rev.1.4 boards should have no issue with switch bounce because of the installed capacitors (low pass filters). The author explains this in chapter eight but I would guess that the example code is intended for Rev.1.4 boards. To summarize, if your board is Rev1.5, enable the pull-up resistor (push button is active-low), and implement software delays to deal with switch bouncing.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn microcontrollers. Some previous knowledge of microcontrollers and C-, Assembly-language will help a lot. I didn't mention this earlier but some knowledge of digital logic will be helpful as well. Don't forget to check if your board is Rev.1.5... you will probably have to modify some of the example code (add a line or two of code). The code will compile and run on your board but the switch bouncing kind of ruins it so try to implement a delay in the code to get around this. Sometimes I press the push button once but the microcontroller will register it being pressed more than once so that is a bit inconvenient.

I never thought I would be this excited about programming until this textbook! I recommend it!

About the Author

Diana Garza received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, followed by an additional year to complete her Medical Technology requirements at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Her interest in laboratory sciences and in teaching led her to earn a Masters in Science Education at the Peabody School of Vanderbilt University. She worked at Vanderbilt Medical Center in the Microbiology Department while a graduate student. A move back to her home state of Texas led her to a collaborative graduate program with Baylor College of Medicine at the University of Houston, and resulted in her Doctorate of Education in Allied Health Education and Administration, all the while she worked in the Microbiology Laboratory at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC).  Her laboratory and teaching experience continued at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and for many years at MDACC, where she later became the Administrative Director of the Division of Laboratory Medicine. While in Houston, Drs Garza and Becan-McBride were involved in numerous courses for technologists, nurses, and physicians to teach phlebotomy techniques. As young faculty members, they began to develop curriculum materials for their own use and in 1984, collaborated in publishing one of the first comprehensive textbooks focused solely on phlebotomy pracitices. Their successful coauthoring partnership has endured for over 2 decades. In 1990, Dr Garza joined the faculty of Texas Woman’s University-Houston Center, where she taught internet-based quality improvement courses and became editor of several journals and continuing education publications. She has taught extensively, been a reviewer/inspector in many regulatory processes, participated in accreditation procedures, and authored, edited, and published numerous manuscripts in the field of phlebotomy, health care, and quality management. She currently sits on numerous health care advisory boards, nationwide committees, consults with companies and organizations, and continues her writing and editorial pursuits, mostly in the field of phlebotomy.

DICE was founded in May 1992 in Växjö, Sweden by Ulf Mandorff, Olof Gustafsson, Fredrik Liliegren, Andreas Axelsson and Markus Nyström, members of the former demogroup The Silents. For an extended period of time, while the employees were also students at Växjö University, the company's office consisted of a small dorm room. During those days the company developed popular pinball games for the Amiga computers, such as Pinball Dreams, Pinball Fantasies and Pinball Illusions. Nice game art companion

The Art of Mirror's Edge: Catalyst is 200-page hardcover concept art book that features mostly character and environment art.

If you like the environment, you'll be glad to know that the book shows you a good amount of visual development work that goes behind conceptualising the city. The amount of detail in the design and models look great. As for the feeling, everything appears very high key, very bright, airy, dreamy with the occasional glow. Because of that, it also makes the city looks almost too clean which is actually in line the city of Glass in the game.

I like how the sleek and modern the buildings look. There are a couple of more outlandish designs but overall it's not too drastically different from real life cities. The rooftops in the games are much cleaner though. Where do all those people hide their air-conditioning units?

There are character designs for the main characters. Faith of course has more pages showing us the different types of clothes, shoes, gloves designs before the final chosen one. Other characters usually have one or two pages, such as Noah, Icarus, Nomad, Rebecca, Dogen, Birdman, Plastic. There are more pages on the enforcers from KrugerSec and the main antagonists. You can see they get a lot of inspiration from military and tactical uniforms and gear.

There are a handful of storyboards and action scenes to prevent the book from feeling too static but I think there could be more.

The occasional captions talk about the designs but they are usually just one paragraph. The other text would be the lengthy chapter openings. Generally speaking, there's not a lot of text, so don't worry about story spoilers.

Overall a good game art companion. Fans should enjoy it, as well as those who like cityscapes environment art.

About the Author
Allyson Weseley has taught AP Psychology and runs a Behavioral Science Research Program at Roslyn High School in Roslyn Heights, NY for over 15 years. Her students have enjoyed great success on the AP exam, with a 100% passing rate and well over 80% earning 5's. She earned an undergraduate degree in Psychology at Princeton University, a master's degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a doctorate from Columbia University's Teachers College. Dr. Weseley has served as a Reader and Table Leader for the AP Psychology exam, published a number of psychology-related activities, led several psychology teacher workshops, and served on the Board of Teachers of Psychology in the Secondary Schools.

Rob McEntarffer taught AP Psychology at Lincoln Southeast High School in Lincoln, NE for over 13 years and Introductory Psychology at Nebraska Wesleyan University for over 7 years. He earned a B.S. in teaching of psychology at the University of Nebraska, a master's degree in educational psychology, and a Ph.D. in education. He has extensive experience in scoring the Advanced Placement Psychology free-response questions, having served as a Reader, Table Leader, and, as the high school Question Leader. He is past chair of the national organization Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools, worked with the committee on the National Standards for the Teaching of High School Psychology, and is involved in writing assessment materials for high school and college level introductory psychology textbooks. He works as an assessment specialist for his school district.

Would buy again if I ever wanted to take another AP Psyc any year

I recommend Barrons for any social studies AP class. 5 steps to a 5 is just too much info that you don't need to know for any social studies class. These are great with summaries of all the important stuff from a chapter in very simple words where you don't need a dictionary, and there are multiple choice questions after each chapter. The questions are not easy to the point where you can do without studying, they are challenging enough to make you ready for the exam. Would recommend this over any other book any time.

Astonishing depth and scope

You are probably not an educated shooter if you haven't read this book. The chapters on biomechanics, vision, and technique feature some of the best information available for shooters. The author devotes nearly 40 pages to the chapter "aiming" and 35 pages to "releasing the trigger." In a field that has been inundated with bad science, fallacious reasoning, and dubious assumptions, COMPETITIVE SHOOTING is a breath of fresh air. A little dry and "textbookish," but the information content is incredible.

Great book for the beginning shooter

This is the book that got me into competitive shooting. It has all of the information that you would need to get started. I highly recommend it.

For the SERIOUS competitor in Olympic events.

This book was written by one of the most famous and successful Soviet shooting coaches and is geared only towards winning the Olympic shooting events. If you want to win at Olympic Rapid Fire pistol, Free Pistol, air pistol/rifle, or Smallbore Rifle, this is THE BOOK to buy. On the other hand, if you are into IPSC, IDPA, Pins, Action Pistol, Cowboy, SASS, Steel, or PPC, then this is probably not the book to buy, though some of the principles will apply. Bullseye shooters will benefit, but those handgunners shooting most of the American sports will be disappointed. Rifle shooters of most disciplines will find this book very useful, and the book is evenly divided between rifle and pistol shooting. The whole focus is on a person who already knows the basics of breathing, trigger control, stance, etc., and wants to hone his physical and mental skills to perfection. At this level, the mental conditioning is nearly equal to the physical requirements. Time tested (and proven) methods of rhythmic breathing, stances that allow for maximum muscle relaxation, eye exercises, and many other esoteric techniques are used. This being said, I used the techniques, practiced 1500 rounds a week for 6 months, and ended up winning a Bronze Medal at the '91 European Action Pistol Championship match in Heidelberg, Germany. So, the book has some applications for all shooters, but is geared totally toward Olympic events. If you are not a national or world class competitor, and don't aspire to be, the book is probably not worth the price. If you are, it probably is. Good luck and DVC.
