Miller's Lost Daredevil Masterpiece

This is the Miller Daredevil story that got away. Coming out around the same time as Miller was knocking the socks off of the comic world with the "Born Again" story in the funny book format, this oversize graphic novel slipped under many radars. Like many of Marvel's graphic novel series, this is part of the main character's continuity and follows up on events of Miller's 1st run of DD.
The story actually centers around the Kingpin and his handicapped wife Vanessa. Way back in the old comic run, Vanessa was apparently killed off but survived by taking to the sewers where she was enslaved by a grotesque underground king who ruled over a band of tunnel dwellers. By the time Daredevil intervened and returned his archenemy's wife back home, Vanessa's mind was all but gone. In the "Love and War" story, Kingpin is seeking help for his poor wife, and in his typical heavy handed way, he kidnaps the beautiful (and blind) wife of a famed psychologist to "persuade" the good doctor into helping Vanessa recuperate. The real problem comes in that the Kingpin's henchman for the kidnapping is a truly psychotic and delusional killer who begins to have conflicting fantasies about his lovely victim. The clock is ticking for Daredevil to rescue both the damsel in distress from the psycho and the good doctor from the clutches of the Kingpin before everything hits the fan. Oh, and Turk is along for the ride to offer a little bit of much needed comic relief. Although the story sounds rather simple, it is a pretty intense examination of the true nature of love and the terrible power of obsession. Miller puts one more notch on his billy club with this fantastic tale.
Because the story is drama and character driven more than action packed, Sienkiewicz's fully painted art plays beautifully in the oversize format. This is much cleaner and visually beautiful than his work on Elektra Assassin which he also did with Miller. The panels are larger and there are quite a few full page illustrations that showcase what Bill can do with a brush. The storytelling is also much tighter, driving you through one breathtaking page after the next.
If you are a fan of Miller's work on Daredevil, and are not familiar with this book, you owe it to yourself to pick it up. You won't be disappointed.

The Peak of Storytelling

Comics/Graphic novels are for me a unique form of storytelling. Combining image with text in a controlled format. As a filmmaker I strive to blend dialogue and image to tell a story. In the study of improvisation there is a saying "Show; don't tell." and of course we all know the "a picture is worth a thousand words". In comics the artists have an opportunity to do this with every frame - a still frame that lets us use our imagination to provide motion and rhythm and sound. Although I have many favorite books - Dark Night Returns, Kingdom Come, The Killing Joke, Marvels - by far Love and War is the peak of storytelling for me. Frank Miller is an excellent storyteller, not only because of his original concepts and details but also because he is a master revisionist. The ability to take a character we already know and love and to get us to learn more about them and love them even more is remarkable. In Love and War Mr. Miller tackles the Kingpin, giving us insight into his personal makeup, letting us see why he is so cold and calculating and in a small way, accepting him as a person. It is devestating to understand and accept the "bad guy" and makes us realize the difficulty in being a true hero all the more. It is in Love and War that Mr. Miller manages to transcend Good vs. Evil and show us how things just are. Bill Sienkiewicz is the perfect artist for this story. His images are just as graceful, violent, distorted and colorful as the world can be. I can spend quite some time on each frame of this book noting details, following the motion of his brush stroke and deciphering the thousand words implied in each picture. He shows what Miller doesn't tell. All in all they combine to excute a fantastic story brilliantly told.

Pretty pictures (visual and literary)

Frank Miller proves once again that, in the right hands, comic books can evoke images and themes just as profound and moving as any form of literature. Miller's phrase-crafting is at it's peak here (quotes like "she sighs and wilts in my arms" come to mind). He can write a psychotic rave, a noir-style gangster monologue, and a wistful romance all within a page of each other.

The art is not what I'm used to (it reminded me of Dave McKean) but it was surprisingly effective in this case. Scenes of madness are chaotic and tweaked and scenes of Daredevil's acrobatics among the clouds are stunning.

So why not 5 stars? Why isn't this the greatest Miller comic book ever (or even the best of his Daredevil work)? The title character seemed unimportant in his own story. This book probably could have been just as good without Daredevil. Kingpin has his passion for his amnesiac wife, Victor has his psychotic/paranoid rantings and obsession with the woman he's kidnapped, and Daredevil...he just moves the story along. His affection for Mrs. Mondat seems rushed and unmotivated and even the way he's drawn doesn't seem heroic or interesting.

Bottom line is the plotting of this book is typical (sometimes sub-par) but the character and drama within that plot are some of the best I've read. Daredevil seems inessential but that's just because everyone else is so well defined

Wonderful Story

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! It was a lovely story and both myself and my 5 year old daughter fell in love with it. When I purchased the tooth fairy doll, Amazon recomended this book. I knew nothing about it or the author. I highly recomend it, especially for little girls. Only because it seems femanine to me, the story focuses around a little girl who is having a hard time giving up her tooth. They need it to complete the queen's throne. I was able to get some ideas for our tooth fairy family traditions of reading the story the night before the tooth fairy arrives, leaving pixie dust on the pillow and leaving a gold coin in exchange for a tooth. The book came with a gold coin as well as several envelopes stuffed with letters to the tooth fairy, letters from the tooth fairy, posters and a finger game. The book art is wonderful as well.

My 6 year old son LOVES it

This book is so cute. It is a very girly book but my rough-and -tumble 6 year old son LOVES it. What makes the book very unique is the correspondence (envelopes with letters attached to every other page) between the little girl and the tooth fairy. There is a fairy-sized poster, a riddle game, and a coin at the end with a certificate. It helps answer his questions about the tooth fairy: what does she do with the tooth, are there many tooth fairies or just one, etc. For myself, I LOVE the fact that it reinforces good dental habits. A coin for a white tooth in good condition (no cavities!).

My brother is a dentist and I just recommended it for his office waiting room!

Don't let your kids or grandkids lose teeth without this book!

My granddaughter is 6 1/2 yrs old, and just beginning to lose her teeth. This interactive book is written so well, and the illustrations draw both child and adult into the story. The challenge of reading it together is just perfect for my first-grader. She will go to the book every time she's about to lose a tooth. My only criticism is the microscopic size of type used on the inserts -- very difficult to read, in the best of light.

Intuitively insightful

Although I enjoyed Watts' scholarly analysis and excellent writing, he went a little too far in his vindication of 'Eastern' values and indictment of 'Western' values. I would give the reader two points on which I disagree with Watts. First, it's ill-advised to conceive of an 'Eastern' philosophy. It's nothing more than a category to put things in. The same is true of 'Western' philosophy. To see this, read a few verses attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus or the Yankee mystic Emerson, especially his essays titled 'Circles' and 'The Over-Soul'. You'll find that these 'Western' philosophers have some very 'Eastern' ideas. I expected Watts to explain this to the reader so that they understood that 'Eastern' and 'Western' are just arbitrary, albeit useful categories that shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Second, Eastern and Western civilization are not as different as he suggests. For example, although some Chinese characters seem more natural than the Latin alphabet, the Chinese written language has become nearly as abstract as the Latin alphabet. Watts' insinuation that Chinese language more accurately conveys reality is a bit of a stretch, as is his idea that Eastern civilization is less neurotic than Western civilization. A quick reading of Chinese history reveals that Chinese encountered the same tendency to 'order the world' as their European and Ottoman counterparts.

Those two points aside, Watts delivers an excellent introduction to Taoism. I should mention the caveat that 'Taoism' is not really a system of thought like Confucianism, but a useful category to put related ideas into. Chuang Tzu did not think of himself as a disciple of Lao Tzu; Han historians falsely (or accurately?) envisioned them as belonging to a single stream of thought like Legalism or Confucianism. On a related note, Watts gives a well-thought description of the Tao on pg. 55:

"But if, as is the case, the Tao is simply inconceivable, what is the use of having the word and of saying anything at all about it? Simply because we know intuitively that there is a dimension of ourselves and of nature which eludes us because it is too close, too general, and too all-embracing to be singled out as a particular object."

This is the essence of the philosophy, and he goes on in the long paragraph to further explain it. Not unlike the scientific concept of electricity, the Tao is not a thing at all, but a certain dimension that we cannot quite explain (the word 'dimension' doesn't do it justice). In that way, the Tao is no more mystical than science. Watts includes a passage from a scientist writing about electricity and correctly calls it 'pure metaphysics'. Empirical experiments only give us snippets of observed reality, which is different from reality itself, for the very observation of a thing changes it. The Tao underlies this reality, and is not observable. But it doesn't matter if we have an incomplete and inaccurate view of the cosmos since we need only 'go with the flow' and understand that the nature of reality is unknowable. This leads to a more tolerant, less anxious existence in the modern world.

Watts does an incredible job explaining difficult concepts to his readers. Watts will give you an intuitive understanding of the concepts of action through inaction and te (virtue/virtuality). I may disagree with how he views Eastern and Western society (or societies, as he would put it), but he has achieved something with this small volume that few others could hope to match. At the end of the book I was left curious and wanting more, knowing that this unfinished book was his last; could you ask for more?

Watts does it again

Alan Watts is a true master of bringing the Eastern thought into the Western sphere of thinking. Much like "Spirit of Zen", Watts uses his wording and expressions, as well as citing sources from the tradition, to gently introduce Taoism to one unfamiliar with the philosophy/religion/lifestyle. With beautiful Chinese calligraphy, history, and philosophy, Watts skillfully expresses the mystical and natural way of the Tao.
While it is truly impossible to describe what is beyond description, beyond thought or concepts ("The Dao that can be spoked of is not the true Tao.. from the Tao te Ching), Watts does a fine job.
