About the Author
Zecharia Sitchin (1920-2010), an eminent biblical scholar and internationally acclaimed author, grew up in Palestine, where he acquired a profound knowledge of modern and ancient Hebrew, other Semitic and European languages, the Old Testament, and the history and archaeology of the Near East. A graduate of the University of London with a degree in economic history, he worked as a journalist and editor in Israel for many years prior to undertaking his life’s work: The Earth Chronicles. Janet Sitchin, niece of Zecharia Sitchin, served as her uncle’s lecture assistant at his many seminars and is the webmaster for www.sitchin.com. A data-integration expert with a degree in computer science, she lives outside Miami, Florida.

Chapter 3

UFOs, Pyramids, and the Twelfth Planet

Lecture at the UFO Conference at the Great Pyramid, January 1992

Over the years, Zecharia Sitchin was often asked to speak at various conferences. In January 1992, he spoke at the UFO Conference at the site of the Great Pyramid in Giza, Egypt. Not only does he mention biblical references to UFOs, but he also explains who built the Giza Pyramids--and why--and tells us a bit about what the Anunnaki were doing here on Earth.

Whenever I am asked about UFOs--What do I think about UFOs, do I think they exist, do I believe the people who encountered them--I am ready with my own UFO story.

It is one about a young man who was hiking from his hometown to another place. As it got dark at the end of the day, he lay down to sleep in the field. In the middle of the night he was awakened--not by noises but by bright lights. Half asleep, half blinded by the bright light, he saw a UFO. It was hovering above the ground. A ladder or steps were coming down from an open hatch or doorway, reaching to the ground. Some of the occupants of the UFO were going up and down this ladder.

He could see their commander, standing at the open door silhouetted against the light inside. And, overcome with awe and fear, the young man fainted. When he came to, the UFO he had seen was gone. But the young man knew what he had seen. Here is what he had realized: “Indeed,” he said to himself, “the Lord is present in this place, and I knew it not. . . . How awesome is this place! It must be the place of the gods, and this is their gateway to heaven!” Now, what should we make of this story? What would you think if the young man rushed in here and told us all that? What would the media make of it? Would they ridicule it, or report it as a truthful experience?

As it happens, the tale has been reported in a publication that I consider very, very reliable. It is called the Bible. And, as some of you might have guessed, the story that I told you is the so-called Jacob’s dream. It is one UFO encounter about which I have no doubts, because I am a great believer in the veracity of the Hebrew Bible.

This UFO report, in chapter 28 of Genesis, contains a great deal of important information. It shows us that in biblical times people were awed, but not mystified, by the phenomenon that nowadays is called the UFO enigma. To Jacob what he had seen was not a UFO, an UNidentified Flying Object, but one that he did identify at once. He knew what it was, and he realized at once that he had inadvertently chosen as his rest place for the night a spot that was adjacent to a UFO base. He knew that the vehicle was operated by “The gods”; and he realized that “this was their gateway to heaven.”

Jacob’s vision is not the only biblical tale of flying craft coming from and disappearing into the skies. There is the story of the fiery chariot that carried the Prophet Elijah to heaven, and the story of the flying machine that the Prophet Ezekiel had seen. Such stories illustrate the point that I wish to impress upon you: If you believe in the Bible, you must accept the possibility of UFOs.

One who was certain that the tales were true was the famed Greek conqueror Alexander the Great. In the fourth century B.C. he came to these lands in search of immortality. He did so because he was convinced that he was entitled to live as long as the gods; and the reason was the rumors in the Macedonian court that the real father of Alexander was not his father Phillip, but an Egyptian god who, disguised, came one night into Alexander’s mother’s quarters and there fathered the future conqueror. The name of that Egyptian god was Amon-Ra, meaning “RA, the Hidden One.”

Fighting his way through Asia Minor (today’s Turkey) and the lands that are now Syria, Lebanon, and Israel, Alexander reached Egypt. His first stop, his very first stop, was at a city called by the Egyptians ANU, and known to us from the Hebrew Bible by the name ON. The Greeks called it “City of the Sun,” Heliopolis. There, in a shrine dedicated to the great god, there was on display the actual object in which the god had come to Earth from the heavens, his so called celestial boat. It was a well-known shrine, and once a year its Holy of Holies was opened to admit the Pharaoh to see the sacred object. Thousands of pilgrims were gathered at Heliopolis at that time, not unlike the thousands who come once a year to Mecca to venerate the Ka’aba, the sacred black stone.

No one knows where that object had vanished to, or when it disappeared. Indeed, one theory is that it was taken to Mecca and that it was placed within the large boxlike structure that houses the Ka’aba and which no one can ever enter. But we do know how that object had looked, because a small stone replica of it was discovered by archaeologists.

I show a picture of this replica above. Clearly, what Alexander went to see and what he did see was a UFO. . . . Except that for him, as for Jacob 1,500 years earlier, it was not an UN-identified Flying Object but the remains of a very identifiable command module of a spacecraft.

Easy to read and understand

The first books of the "Earth Chronicles" series by Zecharia Sitchin were slow to develope and required reading pages and pages of historical research data and ancient documents before any analysis was given that made sense to the lay community. This book zips past the research and gets right to the results of the research and quickly informs the reader as to the meaning of what the documents were saying, according to ZS. If true, it is a complete rewrite of ancient history and man's origins as we have been taught. Easy to read and understand, gets right to the point, and written in a narrative form that makes clear the message of the original books of Mr. Sitchin. It is a fitting tribute to the man who first saw the message the ancient Summerians were telling us, that is being ignored by mainstream archeology.

OUT OF THIS WORLD (LITERALLY)

Thank you Janet Sitchin! The world will be forever indebted for your uncle's research and your collaboration. This book is an absolute treasure. Advice for anyone who is interested in the "ancient alien" question and/or has ever read any of Sitchin's other books ... YOUR LIBRARY IS INCOMPLETE WITHOUT THIS NEW BOOK! I have kept up with Sitchin's work since first reading the "12th Planet" as a young man in the mid-seventies. I own an original hardcover copy of all of his books. This new one is a priceless addition to his collection and contains many "never-before" described interpretations and important information. An absolute MUST READ !!!!

Timely or Coincidence? A definitive collection of articles, lectures, and excerpts

Yahoo News took time off from giving free publicity for STAR WARS to mention that scientists (isn't that a bit of a broad term?) discovered a new planet that they referred to as a Super Earth in our solar system. This was on Dec. 11 of this year and this statement received a lot of negative reactions in mails. One reaction was that this planet could not be in our solar system but might be in our galaxy.

Another reaction mentioned the planet Nibiru or Planet X . . . but in a pejorative manner. He hoped that the Nibiru label would be quickly removed in order that the "True Believers" [quotes were his] would shut up. Since I was reading THE ANUNNAKI CHRONICLES at the time, I perked up. Zecharia Sitchin had been discussing Nirbiru in his articles and lectures compiled by his niece on the planet Nibiru (a "Planet of the Crossing"according to the ancient Sumerians) as well as the alien race the Anunnaki. Curiously, when I returned to the article about the Super Earth to read it again in its entirety, I discovered that it no longer existed. Someone had pulled it down. I still have the image of the planet on my Facebook timeline because I had saved it from Yahoo, but the article giving the details no longer exists. Why?

Had I also not heard respected journalist/researcher Texas journalist Jim Marrs mention Nibiru, I might not have taken THE ANUNNAKI CHRONICLES: A ZECHARIA SITCHIN READER so seriously. Marrs is a scholarly journalist who provides notes and bibliographies to back up his findings, and Sitchin is a learned scholar who was evidently cut from the same cloth -- no sensationalized ideas were used to bilk the public, only actual evidence to support theories. I had also written reviews for GOODREADS on books about UFO sightings and government cover-ups, and while reading Sitchin's reader, I happened to watch an alien abduction film THE FOURTH KIND. Near the end of that film, we hear a tape of an alien's voice that sounds like Sumerian -- "the Holy Grail of dead languages," an expert in the film remarks.

Janet Sitchin, Zecharia's niece, introduces and edits this tome -- a worthwhile edition, as another reviewer wrote, to one's personal library connection. Included here are unpublished articles, selections from chapters of his books, lectures, and letters to the NY Times. Her introductions to each section are often as interesting, if much briefer, than the articles themselves. His niece, a data-integration expert, is clearly no slouch in the intellect department herself. One thing she emphasizes about her uncle is the seriousness of his endeavors: he draws upon material in its original language (such as Hebrew) and does not only rely on translations that might be inaccurate. One thing he points out is that more professionals would be willing to support his claims and discoveries were it not for the fear that their careers would be in danger. Those of us who follow UFO sightings and learn about many government cover-ups should not be surprised at this.

One question he poses regards how an ancient culture like the Sumerians could be become so advanced almost overnight unless they were influenced by visitors from space. As we have seen on the excellent program ANCIENT ALIENS, gods of different cultures might well be aliens who had superior knowledge and abilities -- technological or otherwise. The Sumerian pantheon of gods was headed by an Olympian Circle of 12, according to Sitchin, and to them our solar system had 12 members, not 9 as we believe. The Anunnaki (the giants on the Earth who had sex with mortal women and created offspring) were reportedly from the planet Nibiru. A moon of Nibiru had struck the plant Tiamat (named for a Sumerian god) and shattered it, creating the asteroid belt and even our planet Earth. Tiamat's moon Kingu became our moon.

"Sumerians . . ." writes Sitchin, "drew pictures of the aerial vehicles of the Anunnaki," ". . . a name from which the Book Genesis borrowed to create the term Anakim in the Bible. They were the Suns of the Gods who had married the daughters of Man on the eve of the Deluge; they were the Nefilim"(300-301). He shows an impression made by a cylinder seal on wet clay, an image that includes seven dots to represent Earth (Earth was the seventh planet to the Anunnaki) and six dots angles of another image which could represent Mars, the sixth planet.

Whether you are a believer in UFOs, which I was before I ever read Sitchin, or a lover of mythology, which I used to teach in China as well as in the US, you will find Sitchin fascinating and informative reading. You might want to read his other, well-known books before reading this one, instead of approaching Sitchin backwards as I did. However you decide to become acquainted with Sitchin, I recommend that you do so.

More than enough practice

There are a ton of practice problems in this textbook. It would be nice if there were some challenging problems that make you think a little more. The problems provided feel very simple and take too little steps to complete. There is not much complexity in the problems that are given.

Great as a problems repository

There are various ways you can try to use this book. Personally, I think the best use is to use it when you get stuck on something and need to find a worked out example when you cannot find one in your book. Lets face it textbooks can be kind of skimpy on the example problems, and will often work out the easiest example and throw you into the deep end when it comes to harder problems. This will fill that gap nicely.

It is probably not something that you are just going to grab off the shelf and start working problems. You certainly can try that, but you would probably have to write the problem down on paper or a white board first because as another reviewer said there is no space between the questions and the solutions. Unlike the for dummies workbooks that have solutions at the end of the chapter, it just goes from problem to solution and crams as much on a page as possible. It is not keyed to any particular book, so you may have to hunt a little to find the type of problem you need, but it is really not that hard to navigate. If you look at the table of contents and/or index you can figure it out.

Data mining book focusing on clustering

I decided to start with this book as I think it is the most convenient to start in the data mining field. One big advantage of the book is the way data mining techniques are explained. It is mainly based on textual and graphical explanations. There is little equations, only what is necessary to implement the algorithms.

This book widely cover areas such as data preparation and understanding, classification, anomaly detection, association analysis and clusering. Although the book has a strong emphasis on the two last ones, nearly all standard data mining techniques are at least briefly discussed. However, this book does only have a fiew pages about kernel methods for example. Indeed, it is normal, as kernel methods are more suitable for machine learning (I mean making prediction) than data mining (I mean looking for description).

Therefore, this book is:

* able to explain data mining without thousands of equations

* a good way to start with data mining

* covering nearly all standard data mining techniques

* focused on association analysis and clustering

and it is not:

* a good book for kernel methods and other advanced techniques

* written in the statistical nor in the database perspective

My comment: if you are in the data mining field and not comming from mathematics or databases, then you really should buy this book.

superb description of clusters

As databases keep growing unabatedly, so too has the need for smart data mining. For a competitive edge in business, it helps to be able to analyse your data in unique ways. This text gives you a thorough education in state of the art data mining. Appropriate for both a student and a professional in the field.

The extensive problem sets are well suited for the student. These often expand on concepts in the narrative, and are worth tackling.

The central theme in the book is how to classify data, or find associations or clusters within it.

Cluster analysis gets two chapters that are superbly done. These summarise decades of research into methods of grouping data into clusters. Usually hard to do, because an element of subjectivity can creep into the results. If your data is scattered in some n-dimensional space, then clusters might exist. But how to find them? The chapters show that the number of clusters and the constituents of these can depend on which method you adopt, and various initial conditions, like [essentially] seed values for clusters, if you choose a prototype cluster method like K-means.

The descriptions of the cluster algorithms are succinct. Why is this useful? Because it helps you easily understand the operations of the algorithms, without drowning you in low level detail. Plus, by presenting a meta-level comparison between the algorithms, you can develop insight into rolling your own methods, specific to your data.

Part of my research involves finding new ways to make clusters, and the text was very useful in explaining the existing ideas.

Good overview, but needs to include real-world case studies

Data mining could be considered to be "Artificial Intelligence Lite", since it deals with many of the same issues in learning, classification, and analysis as they occur in the field of artificial intelligence but does not have as its goal the construction of "thinking machines." Instead, the emphasis is on practical problems that are important in business and industry, even though the solutions of many of these problems makes use of techniques that a thinking machine should be expected to have. Data mining has become an enormous industry, and has even been the subject of political and legal concerns due to the efforts of some governments to mine data on its citizens. This book gives a general overview of data mining with emphasis on classification and associative analysis. Anyone who is interested in data mining could read the book, but some rather sophisticated background in mathematics will be needed to read some of the sections. Pseudocode is given throughout the book to illustrate the different data mining algorithms. There are also exercises at the end of each chapter, but noticeably missing in the book is the inclusion of real case studies in data mining. The inclusion of these case studies would alert the reader to the fact that data mining is of great interest from the standpoint of business and industry, and would lessen the belief that data mining is just another academic field or just another branch of statistics.

Speaking somewhat loosely, the goal of data mining is to find interesting patterns in massive amounts of data or the classification of such patterns. This entails of course that one have a notion of what is "interesting" and one of the main problems in data mining is to find suitable `interestingness measures'. And since one is typically dealing with large amounts of data, one must use various statistical sampling and preprocessing techniques to massage the data and obtain a `representative' sample of the original data. In addition, one must be able to handle data that is `anomalous', i.e. data that has characteristics that are markedly different from most of the other data, or that has attributes that are unusual if compared with typical values for those attributes. These issues and techniques are discussed in detail in the first three chapters of the book, where the authors outline some of the bread-and-butter topics needed for effective manipulation of data.

The real substance and power of data mining comes from its role in classification and for discovering interesting patterns in huge data sets. The authors, in chapters 4 - 7, discuss various powerful techniques for data classification and association analysis. Association analysis in particular has been used quite extensively in recent years, due to the use of market basket transactions in on-line purchasing and the goal of marketers to learn the purchasing behavior of their customers. Association analysis uncovers relationships in the marketing data in the form of `association rules'. For disjoint itemsets X and Y, an association rule is a logical implication expression between these itemsets that has a certain `strength' that is measured by its `support' and `confidence.' The support measures how often a rule is applicable to a given data set, while the confidence measures how frequently the items in Y appear in X. The support reflects the ability of the rule to be not due to chance alone, while the confidence measures the reliability of the rule inference. The collection of all association rules that can be formed from a data set is too large to be practical and so strategies must be developed to prune the number of rules. The authors discuss in detail various methods for dealing with this computational drawback, such as `frequent itemset generation' and `rule generation.'

The detection of anomalies consists of the identification of `outliers', which as the name implies are data objects that lie "far away" from the other data objects. It remains of course to quantity what it means to be "far away" and for this reason this branch of data mining, as the author points out, is sometimes called `deviation detection' or `exception mining'. The omission of outliers is sometimes justified, since they are merely artifacts that only serve to alter the statistics of a particular data set. However, sometimes their presence signals important information, if not a major scientific discovery. Data mining therefore must contain tools that detect anomalies intelligently and efficiently. The authors discuss anomaly detection in fair detail, emphasizing the statistical techniques that are available to do it. They classify the techniques for anomaly detection as being `unsupervised', `supervised', and `semi-supervised'. As the name implies, supervised anomaly detection requires the existence of a training set with both anomalous and "normal" data with each class being labeled as such. When these labels are unavailable, one has to perform unsupervised anomaly detection, and for this approach to work the anomalies must be distinct from one another. If the normal data is labeled but the anomalies are not, one must do semi-supervised anomaly detection. The only weakness in the authors' discussion is that they do not include real-world case studies that illustrate the different techniques, such as clustering and density methods.

Wow! I am thoroughly impressed by Iain's life experiences. There is a power that resonates with each page turned. I am looking forward to one day watching Iain's life played out as a Biopic. "The Power of I Am" truly does inspire me to focus on the present so that "I Can" build a better future.
