About the Author
Joseph C. Stemple, PhD is a Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Kentucky, where he specializes in the study of voice production and voice disorders. His current research involves a translational study of various aspects of the aging voice, including epidemiology, treatment outcomes for voice disorders, and the biology of aging laryngeal muscles. He is the author of textbooks, research articles, and text chapters related to clinical voice disorders. Dr. Stemple is an active national and international speaker and lecturer. He is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Nelson Roy

Bernice K. Klaben, PhD, CCC-SLP, BRS-Sis an Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC). Prior to joining UCMC she was the Director of Clinical Practice at The Blaine Block Institute for Voice Analysis and Rehabilitation, a private otolaryngology practice in Dayton, Ohio. Her specialty is in the areas of voice, dysphagia and head and neck cancer at the University of Cincinnati Voice and Swallowing Center providing full assessments and rehabilitation. Dr. Klaben received her degree from The Ohio State University Department of Speech and Hearing Science. She is an active member of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association and has served on the Special Interest Division in Voice. She is Board Recognized in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. In addition to co-authoring this text, she has also authored research articles and text chapters relating to voice disorders. She has given numerous presentations and seminars in the area of voice and swallowing.

This is tough... how can I laud the book and yet chastise the publisher in just 1 review...

I think the title says it best; if you read other user reviews you will see that this book is easily one of the best books in the field. Clearly and succinctly written. I am really happy with the content.

However... the quality of the book itself is just another notch in the long history of publishers taking highest advantage of collegiate level texts and the students that purchase them.

I am used to the $100-$180 text. I like new books, and keep them in good condition, so I generally suck it up and pay the hefty price. Yes... I feed the publishing beast. But I typically get solid, high quality books and keep them that way for many years.

This was the first time that I was severely disappointed with what I ended up with. $140... and a shoddily-bound softcover book arrived on my doorstep. The binding glue is one of the cheaper ones I have run into. A little too much pressure on the binding and it cracks open, loosely scattering the few pages who final, tenuous grasp on the binding glue was just not strong enough. By itself, no section of the book will rest open for easy at-a-glance reference.

Just a few sentences, but this sums up my conundrum. Kudos and kudos again to Dr. Gonzalez for taking the time to put together such an excellent text.Shame on the publishers for doing what they do best: provide exclusive content from a single source for a premium, and continuously lessening the quality of the product by packaging it so terribly. I'd advise finding the book through another source but... this is the nature of publishing.

It is a book that explains Microwave Transistor Amplifiers, while slowly falling apart.

It conveys information in a short time. The paperback is literally falling apart, and this happened with several students in my class. As a manufacturer of books, I would think the company would design for this not to happen, but the block of glue does a clumsy job of keeping things together when a student is trying to read what in the world is going on with these insane circles, charts, transmission lines and other things the author does a good job of explaining.
However, the convention used for the Smith charts in the the first couple chapters is hard to follow, in my opinion. Some examples have a tendency to skip steps leaving the newbie reader to madly scramble for the equations until he finds the right one that works.

Excellent book in microwave amplifier design

This book covered extensive techniques in amplifier design, mostly for small signal amplifiers (LNA), but less for PA. The content in this book follows a systematic way, which is good to the people who want to start from 'zero'. Examples are rich in 2nd ed., and explanations are clear. I found this book quite useful for learning basic techniques in amplifier design. As stated in the book, the techniques are applicable to not only microwave frequency, but other frequency ranges as long as S-parameters are available. There are 'huge' amount of smith charts involved in this book, so it's good for people who prefer graphical design approaches, which basically rely on the use of smith chart. For those who are interested in more specific kind of design, like broadband LNA design, this book may not be the first choice.

This is a very well written book that not only addresses topics that are covered during a Java technical interview but it also has a range of interview questions for each topic.

It captures concepts on a wide range of topics: covering fundamentals, OOPs, generics, collections, threading, memory management, various design and Java language concepts, in a very precise manner. Each chapter contains a series of questions for your practice. This book is really very comprehensive. It also contains lots of code snippets and figures to explain the concept. Overall a great book to prepare you for technical interviews. Happy to make this investment.

Wow, is this guide book ever comprehensive about Java as it relates to the technical interview round! Honestly, if you want to make sure that you are mentally prepared to answer any and all questions in a thoughtful, intelligent manner that is sure to impress, then you need to peruse this book. You might not need all the information presented, as it is pretty darned extensive. However, if you go over the sections you are not sure about, you can go into your technical interview feeling confident. Actually, this is also a good refresher on Java if you only need that as well.

NEWSFLASH: Busyness and Productivity are not the same thing

Heard about this book on one of Tai Lopez's videos, and it is put together very well. You can read this book start to finish, or skim through (as I did) to find what is applicable to you. Even better, each section has a "Estimated Read Time" at the beginning so that you can gauge how long the chapter will take you, or if you only have a few minutes, you can skip to a chapter that matches your time.

For me, the biggest take aways were the Rule of 3 (in which you organize your life to have 3 things on your To-Do list), brain dumping (where you right down all the thoughts that you have at that moment and reference later), and the Collection Box (which is similar to the Brain Dump, except you jot thoughts as they come to you while you're working on a task). I use the "Collection Box" at work to focus more, and I find that it has helped bit by bit in exercising my attention muscle. I also made a note to turn off all notifications during work, so that I don't get distracted by the buzzing and pings on the lock screen.

I've only been practicing the techniques for a couple of weeks, so interested to see how this turns out over the year!

I would rate it higher if only it did the work for me of making me more productive, so I wouldn't have to do it myself. ;- )

Other than that, the book is stellar. Chris's personal account of his own productivity experiments are very engaging, and the book is chock full of great tips, especially the six things one can do when experiencing procrastination.

Easy read with good info

I wasn't really sure if I would like this book as I've read a lot of productivity books and he is 20 years younger than me. But I was curious to see what he learned during his year of productivity. I was surprised to find it to be an easy, informative and entertaining read. He provides easy exercises to incorporate what he learned into your life. I didn't expect to find any earth shattering new info (which I didn't) but I loved how he structured it around the ideas of utilizing time, energy, and attention, a concept I'm not sure I've seen before. I also appreciate how much research he did in his project. The book overall was a great review for me and I would definitely recommend it.

An "Eye of the Needle" clone - and a good one

There are definite elements of Ken Follett's "Eye of the Needle" in Daniel Silva's "The Unlikely Spy". The most obvious is that Follett's bumbling spy was named Godliman, Silva's is named Vicary. But there are differences too - and those differences make Silva's book better than Follett's.
Most of the novels of this type follow a formula - Nazi spy, planted in England, uncovers the real facts about the Normandy invasion, and the brave, muddle-headed British intelligence officer must stop the spy before s/he gives it all away. Silva's novel follows this formula fairly well, but there's a very well-written story surrounding it.
Silva's plot is extremely detailed, and there are puzzles within puzzles, and plots within plots. Alfred Vicary is the proverbial (and in some cases literal) absent-minded professor, who shows a surprising streak of ruthlessness when it really matters; Catherine Blake is the Third Reich's ultimate weapon, who would rather not do what she's been doing for the last five years, but has no choice in the matter. These are the two main characters in a very well-done WWII spy novel.
This is Silva's first novel, and if it's any indication of things to come, he has a glorious career ahead of him. I do hope he doesn't restrict himself to this genre, though - if he does his books will grow very stale very fast.

A Fascinating World War II EspionageThriller!

Daniel Silva's "The Unlikely Spy" has more twists and turns than a corkscrew. This spine-tingling, historical espionage thriller is set in London, Germany and the US during World War II. The plot, and complex subplots, go back and forth in time and place, from the mid-1930s to the period before the invasion of Europe. Thus the scenario is set, and the novel's various characters are brought to life. These are the people who are involved in the Allies' invasion plans, and the Germans who plot to discover the top-secret information, and thwart the invasion. Many of the details and historical figures are accurately depicted, and realistically fleshed-out by Mr. Silva. Churchill, Hitler, Schellenberg, Himmler, Canaris and Eisenhower all have important roles in this action packed adventure - and their personas are fascinating.
Alfred Vicary is a primary character, and much of the story revolves around him. He is a brilliant professor and a noted historian, who was befriended by Churchill in 1935. At that time Churchill was warning Britain and Europe of the Nazi threat, but to no avail. The predominant political pundits of the day believed that Hitler, and Nazi Germany, were a good counterbalance to Stalin and the Soviet Union. Vicary wrote to Churchill, after hearing him lecture, to tell him that he agreed with his assessments. Churchill invited Vicary to his home, Chartwell, and they became close political confidants. In 1939 England's Prime Minister summoned Professor Vicary to his home, once again, to ask him to take a job in Military Intelligence for the duration of the war. Churchill tells the professor, "I need someone I can trust inside that department. It's time to put the 'intelligence' back in Military Intelligence."
Catherine Blake, the novel's other primary figure, is half English and half German. Since her mother's death, when she was a child, Catherine was raised by her father in Germany. She is beautiful, intelligent and a sociopath. She was targeted early by German Intelligence, five years before the war, to be trained as a special secret agent - a sleeper. Her German controller knew everything about her, including traumatic events of her adolescence, and was a genius at manipulating her. He threatened her with her father's possible imprisonment, torture and death if she did not succeed in her mission. And her mission was to secretly enter Britain, adopt an English identity, live in London, and wait until she would be activated. She was expected to discover and transmit the key information of the Normandy invasion to her German masters.
This is a real page turner. Until the novel's conclusion, the reader is never sure who is the enemy, the secret agent - who is working for whom? Silva is an excellent writer. His fast paced narrative flows, and his characters are very well developed. I have read most of his books, and this is one of the best,

Captures the Essence of Wheels within Wheels

Together with "Enigma" and "The Black Tulip" by Milt Bearden, and of course the George Smiley series by John Le Carre, this is one of my few really recommended fictional accounts related to espionage.

The art of lying to one's own people, at multiple levels of duplicity, some venal, much of it unnecessary, has helped to mystify, confuse, and sometimes glorify the intelligence profession.

As an intelligence professional myself, I will simply say that this is one of my top six and that it would not be called fiction if it did not depart for the pure realities as much as it does. This book captures the "essence" of duplicity within government in a time of war, and I find the whole book absolutely captivating and worthwhile.
