My favorite reference in a respectable library

Has become my favorite reference in a busy Newborn Intensive Care Unit (Level III+). Very complete. The defect illustrations are better than anything on the internet. Great for adding explanations to parents and great teaching tools for staff. The medication section is very helpful. I love that this has been updated. Kudos to the authors. I recommend the large edition.

Moderate to heavy reading even for a die hard Lou Reed fan.

I suppose as a book of reference this one works, as far as reading for enjoyment, I'd rather stick a hot poker in my ass. Hopefully, Transformer is better. I imagine it can be difficult puting someones life in an understandable order, especially a up and down guy like Reed, but I fell away in the attempt to follow.

About the Author
Dr. Timothy E. Heron has been an educator his entire forty-three-year professional career. He is Professor Emeritus of Special Education at The Ohio State University. Also, he is a retired flight instructor and stage check pilot at OSU's Flight Education Department and an active instrument instructor with Capital City Aviation in Columbus, Ohio.

Tim is a certificated commercial pilot airplane single engine land, along with being a certified flight instructor airplane single engine, and instrument airplane. He holds ground instructor and advanced ground instructor certificates. In 2009, Tim received the National Association of Flight Instructor's (NAFI) designation as a master certified flight instructor, and the FAA's designation as a Gold Seal Flight Instructor.

Tim has been flying since 1970. He became a CFI in 2001 and a CFII in 2002. He has logged 2,850 total hours of flight time, 1,175 hours of dual instruction, and has been co-owner of a Cessna 182 for over twenty-four years.

"William Lee Heward" grew up in Three Oaks, Michigan, rooting for his hero Ernie Banks and the Chicago Cubs. He majored in psychology and sociology as an undergraduate at Western Michigan University, earned his doctorate in special education at the University of Massachusetts, and joined the special education faculty at The Ohio State University in 1975. In 1985, Bill received Ohio State University's highest honor for teaching excellence, the Alumni Association's Distinguished Teaching Award. He has had several opportunities to teach and lecture abroad, most recently in 1993 when he served as a Visiting Professor of Psychology at Keio University in Tokyo.

Bill's current research interests focus on "low tech" methods classroom teachers can use to increase the frequency with which each student actively responds and participates during group instruction and on methods for promoting the generalization and maintenance of newly learned skills.

His research has appeared in the field's leading journals, including "Behavioral Disorders, Education and Training in Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, Exceptional Children, Journal of Special Education, Learning Disabilities Research & Practice, Research in Developmental Disabilities, Teacher Education and Special Education," and "Teaching Exceptional Children."

Bill has coauthored four other textbooks, and he has written for the popular market.. His book "Some Are Called Clowns" (Crowell, 1974) chronicled his five summers as a pitcher for the Indianapolis Clowns, the last of the barnstorming baseball teams.

Paperback Version listed is International Version NOT Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition)

The paperback version of this book is the international version. It is not the same version as Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition) and in my opinion should not be listed on the same page for purchasing. If you are purchasing this book for a class based out of the USA the page numbers will NOT match up and possibly even more differences. It is only $10-20 more for the hardcover edition, save yourself some heartache and spend the money for the correct edition. There is no paperback version of Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition).

My 3 stars is for the listing not the book. Book is great.

Years pass and still this gleams

There are a few things about this book that should be said right away. First, this is not really an introductory book to ABA, but works as a book that ties so many theories together. That means that it could be used in conjunction with many starter ABA books, allowing its reader to get a feel of just what ABA means. The book also works on both a Masters and a PhD level when it comes to conceptual decision/ debate (an oddity if I do say so myself), and covers so many things that cheaper guides seem to omit. This could mean bypassing some causal arena or not talking about something as simple as the C.A.R.R., but these tiny slips are really not so tiny when you think about them.

There are plenty of great things listed about this book in other reviews, so I'll skip the addition of chapter content and the addition of material and its praise. Instead, I'll add that this is one of the few books that can make or break you when it comes to trying to get licensure. In fact, this book has been listed as one of the top 10 preparation guides to use before testing, and that is some high praise considering how vaunted the test actually is. More than this, however, is the fact that this is a tool that can help you in real life scenarios and, truthfully, that is more important than being able to simply pass tests. In samples as heterogeneous as those seen in autism, you really need to know how to handle multiple scenarios to make a difference.

If you are looking for a navigation tool to help with the rocky waters of autism, this is a great book to acquire. It may have a price tag attached, but it proves invaluable in the long run and that matters more than anything.
Recommended for the student in all of us.

Excellent resource on ABA

I just received my copy of Applied Behaviour Analysis Second Edition today and have not put it down for several hours. I work as an ABA therapist and I am convinced that this is a learning and reference tool I will use for a long time to come to help me be better at what I do. It is very straight forward and well put together. The references to the Board Certification Task list content are excellent and the new additional chapters on Verbal Behaviour, Ethics, Motivation, Negative Reinforcement and Functional Behaviour Assessment are a real asset and make having the second edition well worth the wait. The textbook really covers a huge amount of information and is well well worth the purchase.

Better options exist for much less.

This was the textbook recommended by my school, and I think most State Boards recommend it.

Thanks to being a textbook, it's extremely expensive. I read it front to back, and felt that I got either the same or even better information from free and inexpensive sources.

If you want a version that's 10% the price, but at least 60 years older, try "Practice and Science of Standard Barbering" by Sidney Coyne Thorpe for less than 20 bucks. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1407657216/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_2

The only parts that are slightly more up to date in this version are the haircut exercises and several heat and chemical proceduresâ€”which barbers mostly never perform.

If you'd like to learn more about haircutting, I recommend starting with Scissors and Comb Haircutting. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0916819019/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_15 Then, to learn barbering techniques such as scissor-over-comb, blending with clippers, and various razor techniques, check out Greg Zorian's Master of Barbering (or, Howtocuthair.tv). These are less than half the price combined, and I felt silly buying this textbook before them.

If you'd like to learn more about the structure of men's hair and how it grows, ignore the disconnected bits of anatomy in this textbook. Check out The Men's Hair Book. All in all, you can get a comprehensive education with far more relevant information for less than $100.

If the publishers want some direct feedback:

- Make the anatomy and biology sections more relevant to barbering. Don't just tell us what types of bacteria exist. That's what 11th grade biology is for. Tell us how there's a risk of spreading each one in a shop. Give us case studies. Tell us how their transmission is different. Likewise, relate the anatomy sections more directly. We need to know these muscle groups because we will be manipulating them with massages, and we need to know the neck muscles to avoid injuring clients when turning their heads. Make that the primary learning objective, rather than some rote trivia game.

- The haircutting section needs to be at least twice as big. It's very difficult to keep up with modern styles, but there should at least be some explanation of how one blends with clippers. There isn't. Changing the angle of the clippers, holding the comb differently, changing the size of the bladeâ€”these can all be incorporated into the existing procedures you have. The reality is that a person simply cannot start cutting hair after reading your chapter, whereas after reading other books, they can. Learn from those books.

- The shaving section is egregious. This is a problem that extends to the State Boards. We have known that men have different growth patterns and that those patterns must be followed for over a century, yet this fetish with the 14 strokes persists. Teach us how to shave humans, not theoretical dummies. If we were to use the 14 strokes as they are on a practice client with reverse beard growth in sections 2 and 7, it could cause an injury if the hair is thick enough. Likewise, a LOT of men do not have any upwards growth on their lower neck; given how sensitive the area is, it would be wiser to emphasize going with the grain.

- The price for the Kindle version should not be so high. That's abnormal, and considering how good the competition is, it's worth it for you to adjust.

I teach a combined barbering/cosmetology course. The book is quite comprehensive. I only WISH that the publishers would coordinate the segments of this book with Milady's Cosmetology that overlap to make it easier to teach both together as some of the material is the same.

Poor Quality

The information in the book is terrific, if you can keep the book together. This book is junk compared to previous additions. The pages fall right out, everyone in my class is experiencing the same problem. This is a book a student is going to want to keep, but can't because it is so poorly made.

Canadian VS American Editions

This is a great learning tool for the student or at home learner. BE AWARE that there are two different editions....one for the Canadian Market and one for the American Market. The Canadian version has a lime with a spoon of lime zest on the front cover. The American one is the artichoke. There are differences in the submitted recipies i.e. from Canadian Chefs

Excellent text for basic skills.

Although I was also disappointed that the book did not come with the CD, I have found it a great read with a wealth of useful information presented in an organized, easy to read fashion. This is a staple book used in culinary programs, and I will be keeping this book long after I graduate. I have recommended it to friends who want to learn to be better cooks without going to school for it. The chef who is teaching one of my culinary classes told us that if you only have two books on cooking, he'd recommend this one and The Joy of Cooking. Another great feature of this book is that the pages are coated (that's what makes the book so incredibly heavy) so that they last longer when you inevitably spill something on them while using the book in the kitchen. I agree that a spiral binding might have been a better choice but I have mostly found the book will lay flat no matter where you need it kept open to.

About the Author
Susan Rose-Ackerman is the Henry R. Luce Professor of Jurisprudence (Law and Political Science) at Yale University, Connecticut. She is one of the world's leading scholars of the political economy of corruption and one of the first economists to write on the subject. She is the author or editor of seventeen books and numerous articles. The first edition of her book Corruption and Government has been translated into seventeen languages. In addition to her work on corruption, she writes about public law and public policy from a comparative law and political economy perspective. Her most recent book is Due Process of Lawmaking (with Stefanie Egidy and James Fowkes). She has been a visiting researcher at the World Bank and a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, the Paris Institute of Political Studies, and the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.

Bonnie Palifka is an Assistant Professor at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), Campus Monterrey, Mexico. She has taught a course on corruption based on the first edition of this book since 2004 at ITESM and since 2011 at Yale University. Dr Palifka has spoken on corruption at conferences in the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, St Kitts, and France. Her most recent publication is 'A Review of Drivers of Corruption: A Brief Review, by Tina Søreide' in the journal Crime, Law and Social Change.

The best book about corruption

This book is just the best study about corruption ever made in Law and Economic literature. When I bought the second edition I thought that I have made a great mistake. But, fortunately, I were wrong. This second edition presents a complete new abroach about corruption. I really recommend reading this book in order to understand the complexity of corruption.

Pipes (history, Harvard Univ.) has condensed his two-volume opus, The Russian Revolution (LJ 11/1/90) and Russia Under the Bolsheviks (LJ 3/15/94), into a single readable volume. Forcefully showing why the 70-year-old Communist experiment failed, he provides the nonacademic reader with accurate historical events in a highly readable format. Only a minor flaw in the fourth chapter, where he fails to explain who the Mensheviks were until 30 pages later in the next chapter, mars this excellent book. The approach parallels Dominic Lieven's contemporary volume Nicholas II (LJ 1/94) but is better organized and more complete. The last chapter does a fine job of summing up the revolution and adds a curious comparison between Bolshevik and Tsarist Russia. For the busy but interested reader, Pipes has condensed his classic two-volume analysis of Russia's tragic cataclysm. How that great country became saddled with and ruined by Communism is complex--despite the Bolshevik victors' claims for historical inevitability. Without World War I, they would have remained an obscure intelligentsia; Lenin doubted he would live to see the revolution scarcely weeks before the czar's abdication. Of course, Russia had muddled through the 19th century quasi-expectant of a revolution, ardently so by socialist terrorists, apprehensively so by liberals and conservatives; and the 1905 revolution should have revealed to everyone what a full-blown social overthrow would be like. But as Pipes cogently and rather wistfully describes, the reformist track under Stolypin was stymied by the monarchist reactionaries. After the bizarre interlude of Alexandra and Rasputin, enter Kerensky, the Reds Lenin and Trotsky, the Whites Kolchak and Denikin, and the dolorous drama unfolds. Despite its sadness, insight abounds in this history, among the most reliably researched and skillfully synthesized works ever written on the revolution. Gilbert Taylor

Far exceeded my expectations

I rarely write reviews despite how many books I read, but I felt compelled to review this book.

Considering that the Russian Revolution is arguably the most important political event of the 20th century, I realized that my knowledge of it was woefully lacking. I set out to find a single book that might succeed in giving me a basic understanding of what happened without putting me to sleep.

No one was more surprised than I when I wound up pushing through this entire 400 page book in a little over a week. I found it that interesting. Pipes is somehow able to weave the enormous cast of people, places and events together in a cohesive manner so as even a dilettante such as myself can follow along without much trouble. Finally, all the names I had heard over the years--Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, Kamenev, Zinoviev--came to life before my eyes.

As for Pipes' 'controversial' personal opinions on the Revolution and its effects on Russia, they are hard to argue. He dissects the Bolsheviks' hypocrisies and follies with a scalpel of wit. If you are one of those still clinging to this old ideology, then obviously you will find this offensive, but for those reading to understand the Bolsheviks for what they were: in a word, murderers, you will find Pipes' commentary worthy of serious contemplation.

Richard Pipes is the eminent scholar of Russia who has taught for years at Harvard. Pipes has also worked in the Reagan administration as a Sovietology expert. Dr. Pipes has authored several volumes on Russia and the rise and fall of the Communist police state.
"A Concise Hisory of the Russian Revolution is notable for:
a. The book is a condensation of Pipes huge two volumes "The Russian Revolution" and "Russia under the Bolshevik Regime." Those two doorstop size books are often laborious and lengthy reading.
b. The condensation of the two books hits the major episodes and thumbnail sketches the major personalities of the period in a readable and easy to understand style.
c. This book would serve as an excellent resource and textbook for a course in the Russian Revolution taught in a university setting.
d. The book is well illustrated with period photos. A few maps are also included.
The Russian Revolution's leader was Lenin (1870-1924) a Bolshevist lawyer and professional revolutionary. He and the Bolsheviks were supported by Germany. Germany wished to end the war on the Eastern Front and neutralize their Russian enemy. The German plan was then to assault a major breakthrough against the Allies on the Western Front. The German plan failed.
Russia regained most of the territory she had ceded to the Germans at the treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
e. Red Terror, famine and Civil War would torture the Russian people. Tsar Nicholas II and his family were murdered. Vast famines and the seizure of peasant property was widespread. Over 80% of Russians were peasants.
Pipes gives Western readers a grim look at the rise of a totalitarian government led by a cruel party. The Soviets outlawed laws. Frightening reading. An excellent resource!
