About the Author
Mark Hazard Osmun grew up in Virginia and Hawaii. A graduate of Virginias George Mason University, he began his career as a journalist, writing for Rolling Stone, The Honolulu Advertiser, The San Francisco Examiner, The Dallas Morning News and USA Today. He lives in California with his wife and two cats. Currently, he is writing a new novel set in the 1800s.

A compelling, superbly crafted, original, memorable novel.

In Marley's Ghost, Mark Osmun has written a brilliant "prequel" to Charles Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol". Here is the story of Jacob Marley whose ghost appeared to Ebenezer Scrooge to announce the coming of three spirits that legendary Christmas Eve. Jacob was a fugitive, prodigy, gambler, miner, mentor, corruptor and Ebenezer's partner in exploiting the vulnerable, the unwary, and the needy. Jacob was himself both victim and villain, capable of nobility and vile behavior. After his death Jacob wanders a frozen hell seeking answers and redemption. There he becomes a pawn in the battle between Light and Dark, ultimately compelled to choose between God and the Devil as the future of all human kind hangs in the balance. Marley's Ghost is a compelling, superbly crafted, original novel that does full justice to Dickens and is a memorable testament which may well become a classic itself!

Provacative

Mark Osmun's great imagination has taken us behind the scenes of a story we have read or watched on television annually since we were kids. Even with our familiarity with the story we knew virtually nothing about Jacob Marley, without whom The Christmas Carol would never have been written. Five stars for cleverness alone. To his credit, Osmun chose not to imitate the Dicken's style yet he put coal dust in my teeth together with a clostrophobic shortness of breath as I read through Marley's experience. Marley's journey is a wonderful metaphor for the journey we all travel as we ask questions about good and evil and our relationships with God and our fellow man. Marley's quest to save Scrooge is a journey of love from a man who has known everything but love. "When the time comes - How will you choose?"

THE WRITER IS A VERBAL ARTIST. ALL MY SENSES WERE TUNED TO EACH SCENE FROM THE DAMP COAL MINES AND THE LONDON STREETS TO CANDLELIT DISCUSSIONS AMONG SPIRITS. MARLEY'S GHOST IS A DELIGHTFUL TREAT THAT BRINGS, NOT ONLY ENJOYMENT, BUT MANY MOMENTS OF REFLECTION. IT'S A BOOK THAT MAKES YOU THINK! HOPE HIS NEXT BOOK COMES OUT SOON. Has lots of good tips with great examples

[[VIDEOID:39093261]]The approach covered is primarily concerned with the use of line, development of form, and the simplified design of anatomy. It doesn't go into contour drawing, shading and expression.

The many illustrated examples are aimed at helping students develop a feel for the form and volume of figures they draw. To that aspect, I think it does a very good job.

The use of simple geometric shapes as drawing guides are simple to understand. Not only that, Michael Hampton also builds onto to those simplified mannequins with lots of clearly illustrated muscles. The muscle groups are visualised very distinctly in the examples. They are colour-coded to bring attention those that affect form when the body is in different positions.

I like the part on finding landmarks -- bones that are near the skin. Colour-coded and shown very clearly, with rotating views from front to back.

The book does have head drawing but the focus is on the form rather than the details of the features, although the examples do show the details. It still covers enough for for anyone to draw a decent head.

One thing that's missing is the mention of figure proportions, like how many heads tall a body, length of an arm, etc. That I think will complete the book. There's nothing on bones and you won't learn how muscle works, but this isn't an anatomy reference book. That said, having an anatomy reference book to go along will be extremely helpful.

This is a useful book for artists learning to create and pose their own figures. Highly recommend for beginner and intermediate artists.

This will become your favorite figure drawing book

I read the first chapter of this book and took an online class by Michael Hampton. I really wanted to read further into the book, and I'm so glad I got it. This book will fast become a classic in figure drawing right along with Andrew Loomis.
First, the book is broken down into gesture drawing and landmarks of the body. This will help you structure the skeleton and will get you familiar with where the muscle masses will go later. Most importantly, gesture drawing will help you pose the body in a dynamic and natural way. The gesture is the best way to get more interesting drawings and the breakdowns in the book are easy to follow and easy to complete.
The book moves on to the structure of the head and how to detail the features. With these three parts, the body is complete, and you will walk away knowing where to place everything. Then it details the features of the body like the arms, legs, hands, and feet. The instruction ends with understanding how fabric works on the body and how to use light and shade.

The book has colorful and detailed illustrations and examples. The book is broken down in such a way that it will be easy to come back to sections and use those sections as reference.

My only complaint is that it took me so long to add this book to my collection.

Fantastic for those working to learn Spanish towards the intermediate level

The book was of adequate size to have margins large enough to write down the infinatives of verbs, nouns and ect, and inexpensive enough to be able to write in it without guilt.

Agatja Christie writes in short and straightforward sentences an interesting story that keeps you guessing.

The Spanish translation carries this simple style forward to the reader who wants to advance his/her ability to read in Spanish.

Excellent Math Starter but need a workbook

This book introduces the 1st Grade Math concepts very well, however you will need a workbook to have your first grader practice the concepts introduced to them.

great for what it is.

our son struggles with math facts, so i thought this would be a great way to help him really *dig in* & get those facts, as opposed to the spiral approach. we used primary mathematics 1a & 1b in 1st grade, but our little non-math-brain child did not get along well with this approach. we switched to saxon math (spiral approach) at the end of these books, & have seen his confidence rebuilt. this would be a great program for a child without our son's math disability.

Concept Heavy, Practice Light, Overly Cutesy

I am comparing this book to my daughter's public school math book (Houghton-Mifflin Expression) and another grade one book we have, from the German Zahlenland program.

This book has less practice than any other book. The average page has about 4 problems. The print and pictures are large. It is entirely in black and white. With word problems, sometimes there are only two problems (with a sub-problem each) to solve.

Conceptually, the book asks a lot of first graders. It asks them to look at a picture, say, with three or four groups off people totaling eight, and to tell a story about these people that can be written as a number sentence that fits the pattern below. Then, below, they will have boxes arranged in a number sentence like:

__ - __ = 5

So the child must determine the total, figure out how to make a story to fit the sentence and the scene depicted, and fill it in. This is much more conceptual than in my daughter's German book, and somewhat more conceptual than her Expressions book.

Based on what I see in my own kids, I do not see this as a good fit for the child who learns by doing. There is not enough doing for such a child to pick up the pattern. On the other hand, I believe that it would be an excellent supplement for such a child to really dig into the concepts behind arithmetic, particularly if the child was in a classical repetition-based program.

For a child who rejects repetition and who likes to examine the "whys" of math, this book would probably be a great fit, albeit a bit easy.

I really think more repetition is necessary to really internalize math facts for the vast majority of children, even very bright children (IQ 125-145). I'm not into rote learning, but I do think there is a point at which you want to stop having the child visualize everything and start having them do more complex computation and this book will not get every child to that point.

Conceptually, it is also different to the other books in an important way. Our German and American workbooks have strong ones and tens focus. Lots of grouping. The German book is one of the highest rated in Germany, a country which maintains high international scores in math in spite of a large immigrant, non-native-speaking population. They still have significant repetition and importantly use tens grouping from the moment you add sums greater than ten. The German book does it differently than the American book but it is there. This book (1a) does not have that.

I know that Singapore consistently does well internationally on tests. But Singapore is a restricted city state with a mere 6 million people. Germany achieves very high results in a much more diverse, dispersed population over ten times as large. I only point this out because I know that Singapore math achieved prominence due to its high scores on international measures. So as someone with books from both countries, I thought I'd share my opinion on how the Singapore book might not be as good, in spite if Singapore's excellent test results.

Sadly the German book we own cannot be recommended as it is not available in English.

Checklist of Potential Drafting Issues

This manual is useful for its breadth of issues covered. However, its discussion of many important issues lacks depth, and I disagree with many of the author's recommendations and conclusions. Therefore, use this manual as a checklist of potential issues, but not as a bible for the answers. The manual includes a very detailed table of contents; for example, for the "usages" chapter the table of contents has over 5 pages in order to list each word or phrase discussed in that chapter.

If you don't already have them, consider instead the books by Bryan Garner.

A great tool for students

This is an incredibly helpful book, especially for students like myself and those getting their first opportunities to draft real contracts. My copy arrived with a defect on about 20 pages due to some sort of binding error - holes were punched across the text as well as on the side of the pages for the spiral binding - but I noticed too late to be able to return the book through Amazon. However, as soon as I posted about it the Author personally reached out and offered to help fix the matter and get another copy sent to me. Looking forward to receiving a more intact copy soon. Very pleased!

I too was surprised that it was spiral bound - Amazon should really have a way of publicizing that for pre-orders. But I don't think the binding detracts much, especially since the cover wraps around it.

Excellent reference for contract language

Although this version os much different than the previous version, the advice provided is extremely helpful when you are stuck with wording in a contract whether you are trying to draft it or interpret it. I've used this book for years and now use this version and the previous version to compare, for additional context.

This reference provides examples of when to use and not to use certain phrases that are commonly misused in drafting.

My first introduction to Wicca and still my favorite.

The chapter on ethics and safety is one of the most important. The most thorough explanation of the Law of Three that I have ever found. So many books coming out now on New Age and Occult topics are failing to provide this basic, essential information that protects you from having unintended bad results from your spells. It's hard to believe this book was written over 20 years ago, it is still fresh. I'm so glad she came out with the reprint, so it can be circulated again. I use Words of Power to help myself in school, in my job, with my relationships, finding a house, my kitty's health, my garden, just about everything. Excellent Primer on Magic, Wicca, I Ching & Astrology

Whenever someone asks me to explain more about how magic works, I always start with two steps:
Magic 101: Watch the _Star_Wars_ trilogy (Yes, the movies) and listen to every word they say about "The Force" - it is exactly how Magic works. (Yes, it sounds strange, but trust me on this one)
Magic 102: Read _Positive_Magic_ to take the basic _Star_Wars_ introduction and get it explained in more detail and in a more "traditional" learing environment.
There are many books on the subject, but very few would I recommend to a beginner as most are exploitive or sensationalist. _Positive_Magic_ is always my first recommendation in reading materials. It provides a clear, logical explanation to Magic, Wicca (a magical religeous tradition), I Ching (a Chinese divination oracle) and Astrology (a divination tools used by various cultures throughout the world).
It provides a very balanced, thorough and non-judgemental view of its topics in an easy to read and understand format.

Everyone should read this book! Even if you have only a passing curiosity about Wicca, Ms. Weinstein provides a wonderful primer on "the Craft" and its history that makes for compelling reading. Plus you get delightful instructions on tossing the coins (I Ching); reading the Tarot (a tool for opening up to your own intuition); and writing "Words of Power" (think of these as incantations, prayers, or affirmations, depending upon your personal beliefs). Best of all, Ms. Weinstein writes in a witty, down-to-earth style with one-liners that are sure to crack you up!

About the Author
With over 30 years' experience in the fashion industry, Wayne Hemingway is the expert when it comes to vintage styling. He established the global fashion label, Red or Dead which won the prestigious British Fashion Council Streetstyle Designer of the Year Award for 3 consecutive years. He sold the company in 1999 in a multi-million pound deal and turned his attention to setting up Hemingway Design, specializing in affordable, everyday design, making home and fashion styling accessible to all. In 2010, Wayne launched The Vintage Festival which has become a mecca for all vintage enthusiasts, attracting 150,000 visitors annually.

About the Author

Paul Naas is a professional animator and educator. He runs the Multimedia and Computer Graphics Program at Cañada College in Redwood City, California, and has done animation work for companies such as Disney, Cisco, bZillions/C2 Gaming, and the Children's Discovery Museum. He is also a professional cartoon artist. He has a Master of Fine Arts in animation from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco.

Don't judge the book by its cover

If you are looking for an easy to understand introduction to Maya, this book is for you. Each step is described with simple instructions and further details are explained later in each chapter. This is definitely not an advanced approach to Maya, it is only the basics and that is its strength. In paring down each step in the process to easy to understand explanations, Maya's steep learning curve is flattened out. While defining the step by step processes, Naas also gives us common problems, so we can trouble shoot as well as follow the steps. At the end of each chapter the author adds a short suggestion to take you beyond the essentials for a more advanced approach.

The book begins with a simple animation exercise, which is a smart way to go. It might seem more logical to explain how to build a model and then teach how to animate it, but by saving the most complex part of the process (rigging) for later Naas makes the learning process much more fun. The text is broken up basically into chapters on modeling, both poly and subdivision surfaces, then surfacing, blend shapes, joints, weights, rigging, animation, lighting and finally rendering and compositing; pretty much everything you need to get started.

My only complaint about the book is the cover illustration, the character is not very appealing and the pose is awkward, but don't let the cover dissuade you from getting this book. I recommended it highly.

A great way to learn Maya 2013

The Autodesk Maya 2013 Essentials book by Paul Naas is a great introduction into how to use the Maya software. Using a production oriented teaching method the author introduces the steps one uses to create a character from the ground up. Both the text and the figures are very detailed allowing one to fully understand the creation and animation process. In addition, to building your character there are pre-build, downloadable, models for most of the chapters that allow one to focus on a given chapter's lesson.

In short this is a very organized book that provides not just step by step instructions, but more importantly the explanation of why one is performing certain tasks.

This is a very comprehensive guide on how to properly use Maya. The step by step guides to completing projects are thorough and intuative. Must buy if you are going to use Maya in any capacity.
