About the Author
About the Author Roxanne Small is a registered physical therapist with over 35 years of experience in pediatrics. Her career has included working in hospitals, schools, homes, and clinics. Roxanne teaches a course in "Developmental Environments" to health care professionals working in the field of early intervention. She and her teaching partner, Julie Erbaugh, PT also teach professional seminars regarding Chronologically Controlled Developmental Therapy. In addition, Roxanne has been a guest speaker at conventions and meetings, speaking on topics relating to sensory-motor foundations in children. The first edition of Building Babies Better was published in 2005. Roxanne has more than 25 years of first-hand experience as a parent. Roxanne and her husband, Gary, have three children, all of whom have been the motivation and impetus for Building Babies Better.

Good ideas, although some are a little overboard. Reccomed by my daughters occupationAL therapist, but she said to take some of the activities with a grain of salt. Such as.... not to put my baby on the floor covered in oil to play.

Excellent Resource

This book is an excellent resource for birth parents, adoptive parents, parents of children with disabilities, nannies, teachers and caregivers alike. The activities are clear and simple, easy to add in to your regular routines and play times. This second edition is a lovely upgrade to the first. Endless benefits of interactive facilitation of proper physical development. I give it as a shower gift to every expecting parent!

This is explored in relation to a broad survey of postmodern literature in two chapters, the first on aesthetics and the second on ethics. It offers a coherent thesis for reappraising the relationship between nihilism and the sublime, and grounds this argument with frequent references to postmodern literature, making it a book suitable for both researchers and those more generally interested in postmodern literature.

Essential. A crucial revelation on Nihilism!

I paid $75 for my copy. I was not disappointed. Carefully researched. Well written. Most importantly, its thesis is a groundbreaking direction for those who Study Nietzsche yet still need examples of practical implications of Nihilism on Art, religion and discourse throughout the entire history of philosophical Pessimism. Nihilism and Art are a closer marriage than we suspect, and the sublime--including everything from the romantics all the way back to the Taoist poets--is but the mystic side of Nihilism; If thought is the vehicle which brings us to our breaking point of nullity, the artistic sublime is the revelation of Bataille's "Beyond", where words fail. This book was for me, a crucial link in my studies and opened up several new avenues of investigation. It prompted me to see even greater implications of past works and to challenge my bias that the Post-Modern was in some way alienated from the rest of artistic expression.

I would also recommend the book, "In Grand Purple Robes of Madness" which might serve as a companion to this work, done from a slightly different approach.

A terrible book filled with nothing but Smiley's speculation and conjecture, and devoid of exculpatory facts about Jackson

Frustrating. I, for one, had high expectations for this book. I eagerly waited for its release. I thought that if anyone would write a proper book on Michael Jackson, that would be Tavis Smiley. Unfortunately, I was so, so wrong.

Smiley sold his integrity for fame and sales. Luckily, I didn't spend money on this fiction. I was taken aback when I read an interview he gave to some newspaper in which the interviewee asked him about his thoughts on the (false) allegations against Michael Jackson. Smiley replied with the repulsive classic "I wasn't there" so "I'm not sure" reply!

I have a question for you Mr. Smiley: how did you write a whole book on a man's last months without investigating the most important event that affected the remaining of his life? How do you expect me to trust whatever you wrote when you technically confessed that you wrote a baseless book?

That is what led me to seek a free copy to read because I was still not giving up on Tavis's book. I tried to convince myself that maybe the media misquoted him.

What I read in the book itself left me outraged! First of all, the way of writing is ridiculous. Smiley wrote the whole book like he was inside of Michael's head which is absolutely absurd. I.e. he wrote what were the precise thoughts that kept Michael awake at night. What was he thinking listening to Stranger in Moscow. His precise thoughts before hitting the stage. His precise thoughts while in the car. His precise thoughts before going to the doctor's office. What YouTube videos he was watching + his thoughts on them, etc... are you kidding me?

The more I read, the more it got clearer why this was written in the first place. Tavis Smiley is exhibiting the image of "junkie Michael Jackson". For many years the media worked extremely hard to convince us that Michael Jackson was merely an addict (although his autopsy & AEG trial PROVED that he was NOT). So 7 years after his death, Smiley appears in the picture with one role: to mislead the public into believing just that.

The main purpose of his (illogical) way of writing is to give the reader a delusional glimpse into Michael's mind and with that way, he indirectly plants falsehoods into our minds.

Ask yourself this: why do they want to adapt his book into a miniseries?
Answer: because it is everything THEY wanted to blind us with. They rely heavily on the fact that some people depend on the corrupted media reports and the others are too lazy to research.

I thoroughly read every page of this book and here's why I think it's terrible:

1- Smiley wasted around 150 pages out of 253 vividly describing Michael's visit to the doctor's office to take drugs, however didn't bother to enlighten the readers on Michael's medical condition/history! He merely mentioned Vitiligo once. By focusing only on his drug administration without explaining his medical history will deceive the clueless people into believing that Michael was an addict.

2- Out of the people that knew Michael Jackson, Smiley chose to only quote: Bobby Taylor, Walter Yetnikoff, Janet Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Randy Phillips and Bob Jones! Now what do we expect from someone who chose to quote Bob Jones out of all people?

3- Smiley ceaseless kept on describing Michael's shopping habits -and classified him as an aimless shopaholic- and compared his excessive shopping to his "drugs habits."

4- Just like he talked about his medicinal intake but never briefed readers on his medical history. He persistently talked about his debt but never why he was put in debt (other than his shopping habits). And I couldn't help but feel suspicious about the fact that he didn't even mention his high-valued catalog? Although Michael during his lifetime stated over & over again that his catalog is the reason they are putting him in debt and the reason he will be killed for. So not mentioning this piece of information while tirelessly speaking of his "mess of a finance" showed me that Smiley wanted to paint a specified picture.

5- Most of the analyses & explanations are inaccurate. I.e Smiley claimed that the reason Michael fired Grace Rwaramba because he was jealous of the kids attachment to her & he wanted to be the only parent they had. Another falsehood.

6- In many, many parts of the book I felt like he was speaking of a different Michael. The Michael he wrote about was endlessly unhappy, paranoid, weak, nonspiritual, religion-less, and the worst one is that Michael chose to turn the blind eye from the world's news.

Quotation from the book: "He wants to live in a state of wonder and delight. To do so, Michael knows that it’s best to avoid the news. He doesn’t want to hear about the suicide bombings in Iraq, the mutilation in Somalia, or the devastation in Afghanistan. These are situations that baffle Michael."
Did Smiley even know what Michael Jackson is all about? What most of his songs were for? How many songs he wrote opposing war? He never sought to live in "a state of delight" when he knew people are suffering out there!

Did Smiley know much money did Michael -with an open heart- gave to the less fortune people, the many lives he saved and the causes he supported? No. He only cared to focus on his shopping habits and never once focusing on his charitable work.

Note: Michael Jackson donated more than US$500 million to various foundations, and is noted as the entertainer who supported the most charity organizations by Guinness World Records.

7- Many of the stories told in the book are recycled.

8- Smiley thinks that the Cascio tracks are Michael's and didn't care to even mention the legal battle that been going on regarding the authenticity of the vocals.

9- He dared to compare Michael's life & death to Elvis's life and death. There's no comparison, not one bit.

10- Quotation from the book: "No matter the bizarre nature of his physical transformations or the accusations of his misbehavior, I never stopped admiring his astounding artistry." What "misbehavior" are you referring to, Mr. Tavis? Shame on you for playing with words like that.

11- In Tavis's perspective it's Michael to blame -& the Jackson family- everybody else had an excuse or was persuaded by Michael's vulnerable front, including Conrad. Quotation from the book: "Deeply in debt, the cardiologist is facing a number of lawsuits and judgments against him. Now, with the guarantee of being paid $150,000 a month to serve as Michael’s personal physician, Murray is highly motivated to please the artist."

12- Some parts of the last chapters were written from "according to Dr. Conrad Murray" perspective. Conrad Murray, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and I don't think he's a liable source.

13- The autopsy + Conrad's sentence + Katherine Jackson's lawsuit against AEG was written in one page only. No analysis. No explanation. Nothing. Smiley didn't even question Conrad. He didn't tell how he neglected his patient! How he took too long before calling the ambulance. How Conrad instead of calling 911, he called out for Michael's oldest son, Prince, and traumatized the boy by allowing him to see his father dying.
There are many important things that Smiley could've talked about and detailed but he chose to waste precious pages by describing what Michael's thoughts were while browsing YouTube.

In conclusion:

The whole idea is based on what Tavis Smiley "thinks" happened. "In the final analysis, though, it is an interpretation born out of my own understanding," he stated in his book. He confessed in various interviews that he didn't associate with Michael and doesn't know him well. He asserted that he doesn't know about the false allegations because "he wasn't there". Guess what Mr. Smiley? You weren't there at the last weeks of his life either but did that stop you from writing this fiction of yours and pretend to know exactly what he was feeling and thinking? The title of this book should've been "cover-up murder". Tavis is acquitting those who led to his murder. Even Conrad! What he's trying to achieve here is to simply plant the idea of junkie Michael Jackson in our minds (which was proven in court to be false).

There's nothing here about the truth, no new information, no analysis, no investigation, no insights, no real understanding of the man....nothing. Just pointless chatter to delude the masses to believe a false assumption, made up by the same people who wanted to tarnish the legacy of an extraordinary man who was mistreated by the system for so, so long.

Advice:
Do not believe anything supported by the corrupted mass media. Research and dig for the truth. Read for yourself. If you studied History, you'll know that they always murder those who attempt to enlighten the masses. They want us to believe that Michael is a freak, unstable, drug-addict & a molester to turn us against him and away from his message. As a wise man once said "they don't always use bullets to assassinate you..."

Mr. Smiley, you have failed. You failed to research properly. Failed to respect our intelligence. Failed to live up to your reputation. And mostly you failed the man who is dead now and cannot defend himself.

I'll end this review with a quotation from Behind the Mask: The Extraordinary Story of the Irishman Who Became Michael Jackson's Doctor. For those who don't know him, Dr. Treacy used to treat Michael Jackson when he was in Ireland. He stated this in his book about Michael refusal to be sedated without an anesthetist present:

“Even though it meant nothing much at the time, those words would ring loud in my head on many occasions in the years after his premature death. During the trial of the person accused of causing his death, Jackson’s personal physician Dr Conrad Murray, defense lawyers produced a scientist who stated that Michael had injected himself with a dose of Propofol after an initial dose by Dr Murray had worn off. This is totally at odds with what I witnessed that night. My patient openly stated to me that he wouldn’t receive sedation unless an anesthetist administered it. I never saw any drugs in Michael’s house, and he never asked me to write him a script for anything stronger than diet pills. ”

What a serious waste of money...

What an absolute piece of crap. I am trying to understand why this man wrote a book about someone whom he doesn't claim to have known; obviously didn't research thoroughly and whom many of the readers know more about than this author. How can he possibly presume to know what Michael Jackson was thinking and feeling when those close to him didn't even clearly know? He writes as if he was privy to his most private and deepest feelings and thoughts. In some ways it is a bit reminiscent of Randy Taraborelli, who wrote sections of his biographies on Jackson as if he were a fly on the wall during certain conversations. Just ridiculous, in my opinion.
I have to agree with everyone who has called this fiction, mixed with some facts at it's best.

At it's worst, he is spreading misinformation about a man who has already been and continues to be maligned with lies and misinformation 7 long after his passing. Smiley portrays Michael Jackson in precisely the way the media has for the last 20-25 years and it seems it is a false narrative he is only too eager to bake in. The supposed JJ Abrams mini-series is only more evidence of this. Jackson was a person who struggled with 2 autoimmune illness and sustained numerous injuries, including the burns to his head & face, during his career. He admitted to struggling with dependence to prescription painkillers in 1993, however at the time of his death there was no indication that he had ANY drugs in his system nor was there evidence of any kind of life long dependency. Neither Jackson's list prescription medications nor his very healthy organs indicate evidence of addiction. The only substances found in his autopsy were those that his convicted doctor administered to him that killed him. These are facts readily available. These facts were also presented in the trial of Conrad Murray and led to his conviction.
In addition, while doing his promotion for this book, it is painfully obvious he didn't bother to research or know the facts about the false allegations against Jackson. Isn't it incumbent on any author to thoroughly research their subject, even if they are merely focusing on the last weeks of his life? In not doing so, he only serves to perpetuate his opinions rather than the facts about what were clearly the most devastating and painful episodes of his incredible life. What a damn shame.

Tavis Smiley just threw in whatever ethics he had and tarnished his reputation as far as many people are concerned. He has jumped on the bandwagon of a long list of others only too eager to cash in on this man's name and fame for a buck. The truth be damned because it's not nearly as interesting for some.
It is so far past the time for people to stop lying & misrepresenting this man for profit and for the media to find some integrity & ethics in reporting.

this book falls flat

if a book could get a star for being below zero in the summer time well this is the book. Tavis Smiley is a cool Brother and for the most part i like his commentary on various topics and subjects, however in this book he slipped and Moonwalked without even gliding into the subject properly. this book sounds like a ghost tabloid writer came on in and threw this together to collect. when you write a Book on Michael Jackson then you gotta bring it or you gonna hear about it. and this book is weak sauce.

Bless the Monks!

Our dog Cadfael, a 190-pound English Mastiff, is a great example of what the Monks' training can do for a dog and his owners. He is our first dog and _Best Friend_ came through for us time and time again. While I read many books about dogs before Cadfael came to live with us, the Monks' book and _Dogs for Dummies_ proved the most helpful both in practical and philosophical matters. I also recommend the Monks' book on puppies and their videos.

I think one of the most important services the Monks offer to future dog owners is their attitude that the dog represents a major, major commitment on your part, in terms of time, money and emotional involvement. If you are not willing to invest in the dog, you will shortchange the relationship on all levels. The relationship will suffer. We feel this is particularly true in the case of a dog that is expected to spend most of his time outdoors. The monks are right: if you want an animal to live outdoors in a pen, get a cow or sheep or chicken that has not been bred to be social with human beings.

From the very beginning, before we brought Cadfael home as an 8-week-old, 18-pound puppy, we incorporated the lessons in this book. We followed the monks' advice as far as finding the right breed for us and the right breeder. We bought our supplies well in advance, including the enormous crate (which we used for the first year). We both took vacations so that we could be with him constantly for the first three weeks or so, to focus on housetraining and socialization. From how to keep a dog from jumping up on you (who wants a dog who's taller than you and outweighs you by 60 pounds jumping on you?), to providing the right toys so the dog won't be interested in chewing the wrong things, to keeping the dog quiet at night, the monks were there with the answers.

We like how the monks encourage you to get physicial with your dog, even giving massages. Cadfael loves that. He lets us clean his ears, clip his nails and brush his teeth, too, because, as the monks suggested, we started all these activities very early on. He is so accustomed to being bathed that he just stands there and lets him soap him down and rinse him off. (Have to do that outside, because there's no way he'd fit in the tub.)He is a pleasure at the vet's, too. He has been so used to being handled that it makes the doctor's work much, much easier.

The monks stress the importance of training, and my husband and I cannot agree more. The monks do a great job explaining how to train the basics: sit, stay, come, heel, lie down. While we did a lot of home training, we also enrolled Cadfael in a series of obedience classes, as well as allow him as much social interaction as possible. We can walk Cadfael on a busy city street and not worry. We can leave him in the car in appropriate weather and know that he will be all right. We can let him off the lead on a trail and know that he will come back when we call. We can have fun playing ball with him because he will fetch the ball and drop it on command. We can take him to an outdoor restaurant and trust him to sit under our table while we eat lunch.

One of the reviewers I read seems to have real problems with the discipline tactics the monks employ. We used both the shakedown and, once or twice, the alpha wolf rollover. Neither is about hurting the dog physically or mentally; used with proper timing and drama, they are designed to immediately get your dog's attention and let him know that whatever he's doing is a definite no-no. They are designed to let your dog know you are in charge. And, regarding the reviewer's claims that the monks are indiscriminate in their discipline, here's what the monks themselves have to say about the alpha wolf rollover: "Let us note that many dogs may never need such physical discipline. But if you have a dog that does, it seems better to administer discipline effectively and meaningfully once, rather than dozens of times in an ineffective way." Amen!

The monks are quick to point out the fact that a dog is not a person and certainly not a child. But a good dog is a wonderful companion whom you want to have around and who wants to be around you. It is up to the dog's owners to work with him and provide him with the things he needs to make him a good dog.

An Excellent Foundation

A sensible, balanced, kind, and effective approach to raising and training a companion/family dog. It is ridiculous to even suggest that this book advocates the use of force, and it is unfortunate, because this along with "The Art of Raising a Puppy," also by the Monks of New Skete, is one of the best books available for the casual owner. These two books would be perfect for the first-time dog owner, or someone raising a puppy for the first time. In fact, it would be great if folks would read these books BEFORE making the final decision to get a dog or puppy, as the Monks do a great job of describing in a realistic way, the commitment of time, money and energy needed to have a happy, healthy canine family member. These are not books about how to train your dog for competitive obedience, they are about creating a happy, well-behaved member of your family. One of my favorite things about the Monks is that they put a lot of time into their dogs, and they expect their dogs to integrate into their lives in a way that many people don't. These dogs don't live in a kennel or tied up in a yard. They are actual companions. Each Brother has a dog that he raises, and the puppies and dogs are meant to be a part of life at the monastery. The dogs are expected to lay near the desk or be present at the Brother's workspace, and move about the monastery while they go about their chores. The dogs go to dinner with the monks and are expected to lay quietly without begging. In other words, the brothers and the dogs are partners. While I use some clicker training when I teach tracking (and some fun tricks), and other positive-reinforcement training with my dog as we do various dog sports, these books are always the foundation of my program. At the heart of it, I want my dog to be in my life and a full part of my life. I use the Monks method of crate training puppies, and the puppy is always house trained in about 2 weeks. I also use the monks method of having the puppy "tethered" to me (a leash clipped to my belt loop) and having him get used to following me around as I move around the house during the day. When I am not actively with him or watching him, he is in his crate napping. All of my dogs trained this way are calm, wonderful companions and do well when it is time for more active obedience training for competition. Get this book, you won't regret it.

Highly recommend! Updated second edition!

Second edition - updated - As a professional dog trainer, I was a big fan of the first edition. This updated version addresses some of the same changes to training that I've made myself over the years. I highly recommend this book, and their book "The Art of Raising a Puppy"! These are required readings for all of my interns!

About the Author
Robert Roswell Palmer, a former professor of history at Princeton University, was educated at the University of Chicago and Cornell University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1934. His books include Catholics and Unbelievers in Eighteenth-Century France, Twelve Who Ruled: The Year of the Terror in the French Revolution, and the two-volume Age of the Democratic Revolution, the first volume of which won the Bancroft Prize. A former president of the American Historical Association, he has received honorary degrees from universities around the world, and was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli International Prize for History in 1990. He and his wife live in Newtown, Pennsylvania.

Joel Colton taught in Duke University’s history department for forty-two years. He was educated at City College of New York and Columbia University, which awarded him his Ph.D. in 1950. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has been a Phi Beta Kappa lecturer and the recipient of Guggenheim, Rockefeller, and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships. His books include Léon Blum: Humanist in Politics, for which he received a Mayflower Award. He has cowritten, with R. R. Palmer, the previous eight editions of A History of the Modern World. He lives in Durham, North Carolina.

Lloyd Kramer is a professor of history at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His books include Threshold of a New World: Intellectuals and the Exile Experience in Paris, 1830–1848 and Lafayette in Two Worlds: Public Cultures and Personal Identities in an Age of Revolutions, which won the Gilbert Chinard Prize and the Annibel Jenkins Biography Prize. He lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

This is THE text of Modern European History

It is difficult to add to what reviewers have already provided. I used this text when I was a classroom AP teacher for a number of reasons. Among those reasons was that while most K-12 textbooks are the product of a committee, (committee- a terrestrial life form having at least six legs and no brain.) this book is largely the work of the late Dr. Robert Roswell Palmer. It was written as if the author felt that the history of Modern Europe was not a collection of chapters but rather a story, a narrative to be read the way one reads a novel. There is a continuity to the writing and an elegance of prose that can only be achieved by a text like this. Dr. Palmer was a wonderful historian and a marvellously accessable teacher who took the time to answer letters personally on his old manual typewriter. His passing is lamented.

Great even for personal use

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history or has a class they need the book for. It provides any information you need, and sometimes information you don't really NEED, but it's interesting the same. It can be a little hard to read at times, and the index isn't very helpful most of the time, but it does what it tells you it will, teaches you about history.

An invaluable resource, A remarkable book

A History of the Modern World is an informative, all-encompassing compendium on European history. I was able to attain a 5 on the AP European History exam independent of teaching instruction and based on this book alone. And yet, even if I hadn't reaped an academic reward from this book, the experience of reading it carries a reward in of itself, for I genuinely feel as though this book changed my perspective on society. As the narrative of European history progresses, from the Renaissance to recent European events, Palmer's eloquent and informative prose allowed me to interpret patterns in social structure, politics, and economics that, I feel, give me a greater perspective on modern society. In that sense, A History of the Modern World is a book that holds great gratification for serious and committed readers- in or outside the classroom.

The global mobile communications market is booming. There are almost 250 million users worldwide and should be nearly 1 billion by early next century. Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is the fastest-growing digital wireless technology, tripling its worldwide subscriber base between 1997 and 1998. There are already 30 million CDMA customers and, at the current growth rate, there will be 50 million by the millennium. The major markets for CDMA are North America, Latin America, and Asia (particularly Japan and Korea). In total, CDMA has been adopted by almost 50 countries around the world.

It is not hard to see the reasons for the success of CDMA. CDMA is an advanced digital technology that can offer about 7 to10 times the capacity of analog technologies and up to 6 times the capacity of digital technologies such as Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA). The speech quality provided by CDMA systems is far superior to any other digital cellular technology, particularly in difficult radio environments such as dense urban areas and mountainous regions. In both initial deployment and long-term operation, CDMA provides the most cost-effective solution for cellular operators. After an 18-month of market rollout, Personal Communications Services (PCS) providers have adequately demonstrated the power of CDMA technology to support a marketing strategy based on low prices and superior performance in key areas such as voice quality, system reliability, and handset battery life.

CDMA service providers have a strong advantage when pursuing the market to the minutes-of-use model, given the longevity of CDMA handset battery life and the higher quality of the voice signal. A recent analysis of wireless platform performance by the Telecommunications Research and Action Center (TRAC) found that CDMA outperformed other digital and analog technologies on every front, including signal quality, security, power consumption, and reliability. Although analog technology came out ahead in availability, all three digital services (GSM, IS-136 TDMA, and IS-95 CDMA) were rated equally over analog with respect to availability of enhanced service features. The TRAC study found CDMA to be superior in signal security and voice quality over the other digital air interface standards. According to TRAC, CDMA has several advantages for consumers. Lower power consumption enables CDMA handsets to support up to 4 hours of talk time or 48 hours of standby time on a single battery charge. It has also been found that the soft-handoff characteristics of CDMA lead to fewer dropped calls than with GSM and IS-136 TDMA. One possible drawback for some CDMA customers is that there are some limitations on roaming capabilities. Some PCS operators with cellular affiliates are supporting dual-mode handsets to allow roaming between CDMA and analog platforms.

CDMA technology is constantly evolving to offer customers new, advanced services. The mobile data speeds offered through CDMA phones are increasing, and new voice codecs provide speech quality close to wireline. Internet access is now available through CDMA terminals. The time will soon be at hand when CDMA service providers can further exploit the enhanced service potential of their platforms. There has been much talk of so-called third-generation (3G) data capabilities, where PCS providers will be able to compete with wireline service providers at high access speeds. PCS providers are looking ahead toward providing a range of service categories such as Internet and intranet access, multimedia applications, highspeed business transactions, and telemetry. The CDMA network offers operators a smooth evolutionary path to 3G mobile systems.

The IS-95B standard is quite flexible, enabling service providers to allocate data in increments of 8 kilobits per second (kbps) within the 1.25-megahertz (MHz) CDMA channel bandwidth based on how service providers configure software download to already-installed network controllers. This means operators can implement return data speeds at rates much lower than 64 kbps, ensuring much lower power consumption in handsets than would be the case at a full 64kbps return rate. While operators in GSM and IS-136 TDMA sectors are making efforts to ensure they won't be left behind as data becomes a factor, CDMA appears to have a clear edge in its ability to go to relatively high speeds over the existing infrastructure.

The opportunity to use the CDMA platform to add a fixed wireless service feature represents an added advantage for operators. Because CDMA has ample spectrum to provide a fixed service on top of mobile, several operators are exploring using terminals that would be able to shift the handset between fixed and mobile service, depending on where the user is. The universal handset would serve as a cordless phone in the home and as a mobile handset outside the home. The evolution to 3G will open the wireless local loop (WLL) with Public-Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Public Data Network (PDN) access, while providing more convenient control of applications and network resources. It will also open the door to convenient global roaming, service portability, zone-based ID and billing, and global directory access. The 3G technology is even expected to support seamless satellite interworking.

With the cornucopia of benefits surrounding CDMA, it is evident that operators using this platform will have every opportunity to grow the business once the community-based strategy begins to unfold. The question is, when will they get serious about bringing these new capabilities to market?

Recently an enhanced hybrid technology combining the CDMA air interface with the GSM network has been built, tested, and evaluated. GSM operators can save over 60% in cumulative capital costs using a GSM-CDMA overlay for network expansion of the GSM network using IS-95 CDMA radio access in addition to, or as a substitute for, TDMA radio access. This combines the spectral efficiency of CDMA with all GSM features, including seamless roaming and network services. The GSM-CDMA technology provides operators with a way to serve multiple market segments economically and to offer various services on one network platform. In addition to being a cost-effective network expansion solution, GSMCDMA also paves an evolutionary path to 3G services including high-speed data, multimedia, and mobile/fixed convergence services.

CDMA is the selected approach for the 3G system, as evidenced by the proposals submitted by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), the Association Radio Industry Business CARIB), and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). The 3G cdma2000 uses a CDMA air interface based on the existing IS-95B standard to provide wireline-quality voice service and high-speed data services, ranging from 144 kbps for mobile users to 2 megabits per second (Mbps) for stationary users. It is important to note that cdma2000 is a core proposal of the TIA for International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT 2000). Moreover, support for cdma2000 is not limited to North America; Korean carriers have a great opportunity to provide 3G-like service with today's existing CDMA technology. Mobile data rates of up to 114 kbps and fixed peak rates beyond 1.5 Mbps are within reach before the end of the decade with today's CDMA technology. These capabilities will be provided without degrading the systems' voice transmission capabilities or requiring additional spectrum. This will have tremendous implications for the majority of operators that are spectrum constrained. A doubling of capacity and a 1.5-Mbps data rate capability within a 1.25-MHz channel structure look very appealing.

This book is an extension of the book Applications of CDMA in Wireless Communications (Garg, Smolik, and Wilkes, Prentice Hall, 1997). In that book, the primary focus was on the CDMA systems standardized by TIA and American Telecommunications Industries Standards (ATIS) as standards IS-95 and IS-665. Since the publication of that book, CDMA technology has undergone major changes and has become a viable technology for 3G systems. In this book, I discuss those aspects of CDMA that are essential to understanding system capacity. I also provide guidelines for system parameters of a CDMA network. The book outlines a migration path for CDMA to a 3G cdma2000 system.

In writing this book, I addressed the needs of practicing engineers and engineering managers by explaining CDMA concepts, system capacity, radio frequency (RF) engineering, and other important aspects of the CDMA network. Students studying courses in telecommunications will also find this book useful as they prepare for careers in the wireless industry. I included a sufficient amount of mathematics so that you can understand the operation of the CDMA network, but I tried not to overwhelm you with very complex mathematical derivations.

This book can be used by practicing telecommunications engineers involved in the design and operation of CDMA-based cellular/PCS networks as well as by senior or graduate students in electrical engineering, telecommunications engineering, and computer engineering curricula. I assume that you have some basic background in mobile communications and CDMA technology. If you don't, the book mentioned above by Garg, Smolik, and Wilkes can provide that understanding. By selectively reading pertinent chapters of that book, telecommunications managers who are engaged in managing CDMA networks but who have little or no technical background can gain enough of an understanding of CDMA systems to read this book.

This book can be divided into four segments: Chapters 1 through 4 provide a foundation for understanding the material in subsequent chapters. Chapters 5 through 11 deal with IS-95 CDMA standards, and chapters 12 and 13 provide design aspects of a CDMA system. Chapters 14 and 15 focus on the data applications in CDMA and the evolution of IS-95 (2G system) to cdma2000 (3G system) in order to satisfy ITU IMT-2000 specifications. The following is a synopsis of the subjects covered in each chapter.

Chapter 1. Major attributes of CDMA and the access technologies used for cellular/ PCS systems. Chapter 2. The different types of Spread Spectrum (SS) systems that are used. The main focus is on the Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) techniques that are employed in CDMA. I provide a relationship to calculate the performance of a CDMA system. Chapter 3. Speech and channel coding applications in the IS-95 CDMA system. Chapter 4. The concepts of diversity reception used to improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the system; various combining schemes used to combine the signals; some practical antennas used in the cellular telephone industry. Chapter 5. Functional entities of the wireless network and the TIA-standardized interfaces between the entities. I examine the activities of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to add Intelligent Network (IN) to wireless systems. Chapter 6. A high-level description of the IS-95 CDMA air interface, including important aspects of the forward link (base station to mobile) and reverse link (mobile to base station) and modulation parameters for the channels. Chapter 7. Modulation schemes, bit repetition, block interleaving, and channel coding; these are used in processing logical channels on the IS-95 CDMA forward and reverse links. Details about information processing, message types, and message framing are presented for the pilot, sync, paging, and traffic channels on the forward link. Similar details are provided for the access and traffic channels on the reverse link. Chapter 8. IS-95 CDMA call processing states that a mobile station (MS) goes through in getting to a traffic channel; idle handoff, slotted paging operation, CDMA registration, and authentication procedures; call flows for CDMA call origination, call termination, call release, and authentication. Chapter 9. The layering concept used to develop the protocols for IS-95 CDMA; the standardized interfaces between the functional entities, mainly the A-Interface and TIA IS-634defined MSC-BS messages, message sequencing, and mandatory timers at the BS and the MSC. The chapter also provides call flow diagrams for typical supplementary services, handoff scenarios, and Over-The-Air Service Provisioning (OTASP). Chapter 10. Handoff strategy used in IS-95 CDMA; power control schemes for the reverse and forward links. Chapter 11. Various parameters used to identify an MS including International Mobile Station Identity (IMSI), Mobile Station Number (MDN), Electronic Serial Number (ESN), and station class mark. I focus on authentication procedures, including the authentication of MS registration, MS originations, MS terminations, MS data bursts, and Temporary Mobile Station Identity (TMSI) assignment. Also discussed are unique challenge response procedures. Chapter 12. Basic guidelines for engineering a CDMA system, including a discussion of propagation models, link budgets, the transition from analog operation to CDMA operation, radio link capacity, facility engineering, border cells on a boundary between two service providers, and interfrequency handoff. Chapter 13. Procedures for calculating the capacity of the reverse and forward link of a CDMA system; a procedure to develop a link safety margin parameter for each of the forward link channels. Chapter 14. Standards for data services supported by CDMA cellular/PCS systems; highlights of the TIA IS-99, TIA IS-637, and TIA IS-657 standards. I describe the architecture for each of the four data services (e.g., packet data, asynchronous data, facsimile, and short message services) and the protocol stacks supported by these services. Chapter 15. The cdma2000, 3G evolution of IS-95. The cdma2000 Radio Transmission Technology (RTT) is a wideband, SS radio interface that uses CDMA technology to satisfy the needs of 3G wireless communication systems.

Appendix A presents traffic tables for a variety of blocking probabilities and channel numbers. Appendix B comprises a list of abbreviations I introduce in the text and that are common to the industry. The references cited in Appendix C are papers and texts that I have found useful and, when considered in addition to those cited in the text, provide a rich background for readers interested in looking into digital wireless technology in greater depth.

I suggest chapters 1-11 for those who are interested in IS-95 standards but who do not have much background in digital communications. Those who have adequate background in digital communications may skip chapters 1-4.

I recommend chapters 1, 2, 4-10, 12, and 13 for those who are involved with the design of a CDMA system. The engineering managers should use chapters 1 and 5-12 to achieve adequate knowledge of IS-95 CDMA.

I suggest chapters 1-8, 10-12, 13, and 15 for a one-semester graduate course in IS-95 CDMA and its evolution to cdma2000.

An introduction to IS-95, and a glance to CDMA2000

The book's content is organized very well. I recommend the book those readers, as it is stated in its preface, who needs an easy and smooth introduction to IS-95 and CDMA 2000, but not requiring a detailed mathematical analysis, or complex and complete systems architectures, network protocols. The book gives a good outline of IS-95 and explain the advances coming with CDMA 2000.

IS-95 CDMA and CDMA 2000

This is definitely not the right book if you do not know anything about wireless communications and you just want to have an idea of this topic. In order to understand most of the chapters you need quite a strong background on analog (AMPS) and TDMA systems(GSM). If this is the case, this book is helpful to understand all the main features of the IS-95 CDMA standard and the differences between this systems and the previously mentioned ones. The book is complete, well organized and structured even though sometimes it exceeds in details and becomes heavy to read. But if you are not interested in the mathematical parts you can easily skip to the following section without losing anything.

"cdma2000" should not be in the title of this book!

This book has only one chapter on cdma2000, most of which is a re-work of what's available from standard specifications and freely downloadable from .... The use of "cdma2000" in the title of this book is somewhat tongue-in-cheek, as the book provides little insight beyond what's readily (and cryptically) available elsewhere. The treatment of IS-95 is deeper, particularly on handoff. Coverage of power control is terse. On the whole, this book provides good grounding for IS-95 (cdmaOne), yet leaves the reader to make appropriate connections to cdma2000.
