One Nation under AARP: The Fight over Medicare, Social Security, and America's Future, by Frederick R. Lynch

This book provides a fresh and even-handed account of the newly modernized AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons)—the 40-million member insurance giant and political lobby that continues to set the national agenda for Medicare and Social Security. Frederick R. Lynch addresses AARP’s courtship of 78 million aging baby boomers and the possibility of harnessing what may be the largest ever senior voting bloc to defend threatened cutbacks to Social Security, Medicare, and under-funded pension systems. Based on years of research, interviews with key strategists, and analyses of hundreds documents, One Nation under AARP profiles a largely white generation, raised in the relatively tranquil 1950s and growing old in a twenty-first century nation buffeted by rapid economic, cultural, and demographic change. Lynch argues that an ideologically divided boomer generation must decide whether to resist entitlement reductions through its own political mobilization or, by default, to empower AARP as it tries to shed its “greedy geezer” stereotype with an increasingly post-boomer agenda for multigenerational equity.

From the Inside Flap
"Lynch provides a fresh and comprehensive look at the potential for politically mobilizing the large Boomer generation. He successfully mixes anecdotes, scholarship, and statistics to present an entertaining and informative analysis of a timely topic. Anyone desiring to effect change in public policy will welcome this book."—William H. Frey, The Brookings Institution

“Fred Lynch has written a nuanced and marvelously comprehensive examination of the state of the Boomer Nation. This book offers an in-depth look at the economic challenges facing Boomers as well as a colorful account of how AARP has tried to rebrand itself to attract the generation that once celebrated the free spirit and hated the ‘establishment’.”—Neil Howe, co-author of The Graying of the Great Powers

"A timely and important study of one of the most powerful lobbying groups in America as it redefines its mission and its message to confront the generational challenges of the twenty-first century." —Steve Gillon, author of Boomer Nation and Resident Historian of the History Channel

"Fred Lynch's interpretation is an illuminating and much needed empirical corrective to the confusing and misleading cant that dominates so much of the debate. His scholarship deftly distinguishes between the organization's marketing to an aging society and the diverse realities of that population demographic." —Ted Marmor, author of Fads, Fallacies, and Foolishness in Medical Care Management and Policy and The Politics of Medicare

Interesting, insightful and lively
By DS
If you are over 50 and have a real mailbox, you know AARP, and this is the book you should read about this influential organization and the age group it represents. The book is lively, well written and very interesting, with insights about AARP and the "boomer generation" that I found fascinating. Fred Lynch goes well beyond the stereotypes of AARP and the "boomers", placing both in a broader perspective. With access to the leadership of AARP and interviews with many contemporary thinkers, Lynch shows how AARP has worked hard to overcome its image as a glorified insurance broker representing greedy seniors, and how 50 to 65 year-olds are far from a homogeneous group. Certainly some people now approaching retirement were protesters and involved in the social upheavals of the 1960s and early 1970s. But others were on the other side of these issues and have more traditional social views. As America debates its financial future, this book could not be more timely. Lynch clearly describes the differences in background and priorities between the "AARP generation" and those who are younger and are being asked to carry much of the financial burden for seniors who are generally unprepared for retirement. As these generational conflicts heat up, AARP may end up as a powerful uniting force for seniors. If you want to understand this important aspect of the future of our society, read this book!

One Nation under AARP - A Must Read
By Monica B. Morris
Professor Lynch's One Nation Under AARP appeals both to scholars and to general readers. His concern is with the 78 million aging baby boomers and their courtship by the newly modernized and transformed 40-million member AARP.

With lively, often humorous, writing, he profiles the sociological and demographic characteristics of the boomer generation and the potential political influence of this huge group. The boomers have come of age - and old age- in a changed and changing society and in a changed and changing economic and cultural global environment. Many who have taken a secure retirement for granted are now worried by the real-estate meltdown, the stock market crash, and the diminishing of their retirement accounts. Seniors vote in higher proportion to other age groups but they have not thus far voted as a united bloc. Will they be galvanized by these events and use their "senior power" to fight against the threats to Medicare and Social Security and other social supports?

Lynch also analyzes AARP' efforts to study and recruit aging boomers and its role in the passage of the controversial Affordable Care Act ("Obama Care"). In so doing, he provides a long overdue analysis of AARP's commercial and political activities. This is a timely and highly readable book for anyone interested in American politics and social change.

Fascinating look at a leviathan organization
By Mark J. Miller
One Nation under AARP offers a fascinating profile of a leviathan organization struggling to balance competing agendas of its for-profit and advocacy divisions. Fred Lynch also deals thoughtfully with AARP's sometimes conflicting strategies to serve today's seniors and the aging baby boom generation.

More broadly, Lynch offers important insights into the pivotal role AARP plays in setting the national agenda for Social Security and Medicare. He examines thoughtfully the conflicting impulses of conservative older voters to support entitlements at the same time that they rail against "big government." He asks important questions about the potential potency of older Americans as a voting bloc, the future of health care reform and the Tea Party.

This is a must read for anyone interested in the inner workings of policymaking in Washington affecting older Americans.

Solid
By Michael Philliber
Originally published in 1960 (republished in 1990) "Karate: The Art of "Empty-Hand" Fighting" is an early, straightforward "how-to" book of principles of Karate. It covers a short history of Karate; lays out a weekly work-out and training schedule; explains the various punches, strikes, blocks and kicks along with their applications; shows samples of techniques in combination; various defensive moves from the floor, in a chair, and other venues; and walks the karateka through the heian number 4 kata.

It becomes quickly obvious that the material was pulled together long before Karate became commercialized in the West. All of the pictures are in clear, black and white photos. Sparring only takes up one short chapter and pictures the contestants without any protective gear. The main focus of the book is on learning the proper way to perform strikes, punches, blocks and kicks, and their martial applications. The explanations that accompany each chapter and every picture are sensible and lucid.

"Karate" is a basic, but useful volume. It will help the practitioner to have a sense of groundedness to one branch of the martial arts before the sports aspect took over. This would make a solid addition to any martial artists library. I highly recommend the book.

A good book for beginners and middle level students
By AVINASH DAL
This book has given a lot on basic techniques. This is very important for initial students as well as clearing the fundamentals in middle level students. It may not be attractive to Karateka with black belt or with advanced training but one must remember that, in life as well as Karate, basics are most important.

The focus on Kata training is probably not highlighted but the details given for Kihon training are good and need to be practiced as described by the author. If, what is given in the book, is practiced sincerely even by advanced students, it may be a good refresher course especially for some who may be practising after a gap.

I would therefore recommend the book for students of Kyu 9 to 4 and I think it could be prescribed as a standard textbook for the students of Karatedo

The Only True Karate
By william n.
Master Nishiyama a student of Gichen Funakoshi the father of traditional hard style karate in Japan called Shotokan, has preserved the Essentials techniques wherein dynamic forces are concentrated by certain stances, muscle focusing contraction, timming and breathing with reflex like speed. This is linked to the mass of the earth so that total force transfers into the apponent. I have studied many different martial arts under the name of karate, but, after 22 years only Shotokan karate has been able to mount such force to stop an attack with only one punch. In my opinion it is the only true karate where even a small person can stop a much larger opponent. William Nuesse MD
Hidetaka Nishiyama was my chief instructor.

Special Sorrows: The Diasporic Imagination of Irish, Polish, and Jewish Immigrants in the United States, by Matthew Frye Jacobson

Conventional wisdom would have us believe that every immigrant to the United States "became American," by choice and with deliberate speed. Yet, as Special Sorrows shows us, this is simply untrue. In this compelling revisionist study, Matthew Frye Jacobson reveals tenacious attachments to the Old World and explores the significance of homeland politics for Irish, Polish, and Jewish immigrants at the turn of the twentieth century.

Drawing on Yiddish, Polish, and English-language sources, Jacobson discovers the influence of nationalist ideologies in the overt political agendas of such ethnic associations as the Knights of Zion and the Polish Falcons, as well as in newspapers, vernacular theater, popular religion, poetry, fiction, and festivals, both religious and secular. In immigrant communities, he finds that nationalism was a powerful component of popular sensibility.

A captivating example of Jacobson's thesis is immigrant reaction to American intervention in Cuba. Masculinist/militarist strains of nationalist culture met with the keen impulse to aid a subjugated people. The three national groups, rich with memories of their own subjugation, found an unlikely outlet in the Caribbean. But when the U.S. war for Cuban liberation was followed by a crusade for Philippine subjugation, immigrants faced a dilemma: some condemned the American empire rich in Old World parallels; others dismissed the Filipinos as racial "others" and embraced the glories of conquest. In effect, the crucible of American imperialism was vital to many immigrants' Americanization, in the sense of passionate participation in national politics, pro or con.

This work answers the call of scholars to recover the full experience of these immigrants. It adds to the tapestry of America's turn-of-the-century political culture and restores an essential transnational dimension to questions of ethnic identity and behavior.

Review
A scholarly study of the real roots of what Jacobson calls 'America's largely assimilated but ultimately unmeltable ethnics.' It's a startling point of view for readers who are accustomed to the self-congratulatory myth of America as a beacon of liberty to which the 'huddled masses' of the world look with longing. (Jonathan Kirsch Los Angeles Times)

Jacobson is a remarkable kind of historian, as comfortable with the subtle analysis of literary texts as in tracing the complex historical paths of nationalism through diverse groups. (Eric Homberger American Studies in Europe)

Most recently scholars like Thistlethwaite, Nugent, and others have depicted the migration as an international and global phenomenon, viewing the movement as a dispersion to many lands, a diaspora. Matthew Josephson follows this latest trend of placing migration in a world context. His work, Special Sorrows, highlights the importance of the national homeland in the minds of newcomers and thereby makes a substantial contribution to our understanding of American immigrant adjustment...His comparative approach and his linguistic feat are admirable. As a result the reader comes away with the surprising insight that ethnic nationalism was important well beyond the traditional patriotic societies...The work will also intrigue its audience from its employing the latest feminist or gender theory on nationalism. (Victor R. Greene American Jewish History)

Jacobson's pathbreaking and provocative book focuses on the continuing Old World attachments of America's Irish, Polish, and East European Jewish immigrants. Using an impressive array of foreign-language sources, Jacobson demonstrates that nationalist images rooted in the Old World suffused both popular and literary immigrant culture...Innovative in both his comparative approach and in his reading of sources...One of the most significant studies of immigrant life in many a year. (J. D. Sarna Choice)

Interest in the ways homeland allegiances and feelings of peoplehood have influenced American ethnic political behavior...is long standing among diplomatic and ethnic historians...Matthew Frye Jacobson's original, well-conceived work decisively moves the subject from the realm of politics to the new cultural history. Light is shed on an old subject, which, now freshly illuminated, is revealed to be far more laden with significant meanings than one might have thought...In reconceiving the subject of the international politics of ethnic groups, Jacobson forms a dynamic conceptual grid at the juncture of nationalism, race, and gender. His understanding of the importance of whiteness in rooting the ethnics' own emergent American identities and in complicating their understanding of the experience of victimization leads to the deft analytical maneuver that forms the center of the book: the presentation of Irish, Polish, and Jewish responses to the Spanish-American War and, in its wake, the American acquisition of a colonial empire in Asia and the Caribbean...[T]his is a pathbreaking, intelligent book that deserves a wide reading, both for what it reveals about American ethnicity and for its contributions as an analytical model. (David A. Gerber American Historical Review)

This interesting book provides what in effect is a revisionist approach to the history of immigration to the United States, by examining the continuing connection to their homelands of immigrants who were Irish, Polish, and Jewish, and by examining their reactions to changes in American foreign policy. (Historical Journal of Massachusetts)

[This] study...marks another milestone in the swerve away from the balkanization of United States history...Carefully written with reliance on Irish, Polish, and Yiddish sources, with a keen eye to differences within each group, this book deserves a careful reading by those interested in the separate identities of immigrant groups and how their feelings about their homelands affected their ongoing struggles in the United States. (Mark Wyman Journal of American History)

This innovative work should encourage more study of 'the psychodrama of exile' and its contribution to the fashioning of the world's most powerful and perhaps most perplexing nation...This is a rich and relevant study. (Interrational Minds)

Matthew Jacobson's pace-setting cultural study of three turn-of-the-century immigrant communities shows how the imagination of countries of origin shaped the consciousness of Irish, Polish, and Eastern European settlers. In a masterful analysis of their writings and other forms of cultural expression, he reveals the ways in which their preoccupation with a homeland (in the case of Jews, an imagined homeland), their consciousness of themselves as exiles, created a new and complex kind of almost imperialist surveillance of the world they had left behind, a perspective on national others that has become part of modern American consciousness, as today's headlines suggest. (William R. Taylor, New York University)

A fresh, original, insightful, and strikingly ambitious effort to reexamine the nationalist impulse in America from the 1840s to our own day as mirrored in the experiences of three carefully selected groups. Inspired by a shift in perspective in teh study of immigration and ethnic history, Jacobson has ventured to do the first comparative study of the common culture of an American ethnopolitical moral consciousness as shaped by the psychodrama of exile. (Moses Rischin, San Francisco State University)

Imaginatively conceived, gracefully written, and persuasively argued, this book makes a major contribution. (David M. Emmons, University of Montana)

Special Sorrows deserves the praise heaped upon it by commentators on the book jacket. It is an original, spacious, extremely well-written and often brilliant analysis of the ways in which the ethno-Americanization of Irish, Polish, and Jewish immigrants intersected with their old country nationalist aspirations. Mastering an extraordinary range of sources in the experience of each group--literary, theatrical, the press, and political speeches--Jacobson shows how the nationalism of each group in exile was often intensified by its contact with America...Only Jacobson has taken on the exploration of how ethnic group national liberation movements intersect with the process of Americanization itself, and he has done it for these otherwise notably different groups in a persuasive and fascinating way. (Lawrence H. Fuchs Studies in Contemporary Jewry)

From the Inside Flap
"Jacobson's book impressively lives up to its stark and splendid title, which is borrowed from Polish-Jewish revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg's capsule description of the bonds uniting people into nations. For the immigrants whom Jacobson considers, nationalist sorrows seemed especially tragic, as they were felt and resisted in exile from the nations whose causes were being championed. Special Sorrows carefully delineates the centrality of Jewish, Polish and Irish supporters in the United States to national liberation movements abroad and, as expertly, details how such movements shaped immigrant life in the United States."—David Roediger, from the Foreword

From the Back Cover
Conventional wisdom would have us believe that every immigrant to the United States "became American", by choice and with deliberate speed. Drawing on Yiddish, Polish, and English-language sources, Jacobson discovers the influence of nationalist ideologies in the overt political agendas of such ethnic associations as the Knights of Zion and the Polish Falcons, as well as in newspapers, vernacular theater, popular religion, poetry, fiction, and festivals both religious and secular. The three national groups, laden with memories of their own subjugation, found an unlikely outlet in the Caribbean. This work answers the call of scholars to recover the fullexperience of these immigrants. It adds to the tapestry of America's turn-of-the-century political culture and restores an essential transnational dimension to questions of ethnic identity and behavior.

Special Sorrows
By Alice F
This book focuses on the immigration period around the turn of the last century. The first few chapters on how life in USA chronnicled the emigrants' views; that is, the reasons for emigration and the hope the US policy would support their dreams of creating (Jews) or reclaiming (Irish an Poles) a homeland. This part was somewhat tedious reading because it was too repetitive. The later chapters on the emigrants' reaction to the conflict in Cuba and the Phillipines were fascintating. It revealed the beginnings of empire building and sounded like current mideast policy.

Where's the paperback?
By A Customer
This marvelous and insightful immigration history represents cultural history at its finest, with brilliant thoughts on the broader issues of homeland, citizenship and national identity alongside detailed investigations of Polish, Irish, and Eastern European settlers. If only this book was published in paperback, so it would be more accessible in the classroom!

Average text for low-level students

I teach at a small college in China, so this is a good text for the level of my students. The exercises are good but you are forced to purchase the Class CD for an additional $60, making this a very expensive textbook.

Honestly the worst textbook I've ever read.
By Selena
I understand textbooks are a tool for information; there are no guidelines for what makes a great textbook because let's be serious, it's rare to find a textbook that makes the content interesting enough to read for fun. So these complaints are real, it's not that the content for the CLASS is boring, it's that this book is just poorly put together.

I was really excited for this class since it's an area that I'd like to work in the future, but this book is just horrible horrible. My biggest complaint is its redundancy. I feel like the editor just sent out topics for random nurses to write about, and stuck them in the book without regard to flow, redundancy, etc. If I have to read the words, "Community/public health nursing has three/four components...(insert whatever components each author decides are most important)" one more time I might have a stroke. It's comparable to reading a new book with each chapter, with the same topic but different criteria for what comprises PHN.

Thank goodness my clinical for this class teaches me something, because I'm not getting anything from this. But the kindle version is really nice, it's easy to highlight and you can read all your highlights on a single page without having to skip around, and it has a nifty flashcard tool that I haven't utilized yet, but looks promising. But the textbook itself...yeah no. But I had to get it anyway so what can I do.

Zero stars would be a better choice
By T. Buttermore
Required for class, and hands down, THE worst written text I've ever had the displeasure of reading (or attempted to read)! If I was actually interested in becoming a community health nurse, I might be a little less resentful, but even then, the writers MUST attempt to keep the reader involved and interested in the material they're presenting. This was not the case in this book. So much information is given and so many details are listed that I could not focus properly on what I was suppose to learn. I passed, but that's because the class ran for only 1/2 a semester and I didn't have to have an in-depth knowledge of every aspect the writers presented.

The best thing about this text...sending it packing for trade-in.

This book was excruciatingly boring to read
By ARM
This book was excruciatingly boring to read. There were regularly entire paragraphs that literally said nothing. It's a great book if you want to memorize 40 different acronyms of organizations that you will never need to know about per chapter. Even the online review Q's were crap, which is unfortunate, because usually the Evolve Q's are very helpful. Some of them didn't even have the right answer keyed. If your teacher picks this book for your class, then try to just answer the objectives at the beginning of the chapter, know the terms, and look at the tables. Of course all teachers' test Q's are different.

Black Boy: A Record of Childhood and Youth, by Richard Wright

Richard Wright grew up in the woods of Mississippi amid poverty, hunger, fear, and hatred. He lied, stole, and raged at those around him; at six he was a "drunkard," hanging about in taverns. Surly, brutal, cold, suspicious, and self-pitying, he was surrounded on one side by whites who were either indifferent to him, pitying, or cruel, and on the other by blacks who resented anyone trying to rise above the common lot.

Black Boy is Richard Wright's powerful account of his journey from innocence to experience in the Jim Crow South. It is at once an unashamed confession and a profound indictment—a poignant and disturbing record of social injustice and human suffering.

Review
Autobiography by Richard Wright, published in 1945 and considered to be one of his finest works. The book is sometimes considered a fictionalized autobiography or an autobiographical novel because of its use of novelistic techniques. Black Boy describes vividly Wright's often harsh, hardscrabble boyhood and youth in rural Mississippi and in Memphis, Tenn. When the work was first published, many white critics viewed Black Boy primarily as an attack on racist Southern white society. From the 1960s the work came to be understood as the story of Wright's coming of age and development as a writer whose race, though a primary component of his life, was but one of many that formed him as an artist. --The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

About the Author
Richard Wright won international renown for his powerful and visceral depiction of the black experience. He stands today alongside such African-American luminaries as Zora Neale Hurston, James Baldwin, and Toni Morrison, and two of his novels, Native Son and Black Boy, are required reading in high schools and colleges across the nation. He died in 1960.

One winter morning in the long-ago, four-year-old days of my life I found myself standing before a fireplace, warming my hands over a mound of glowing coals, listening to the wind whistle past the house outside. All morning my mother had been scolding me, telling me to keep still, warning me that I must make no noise. And I was angry, fretful, and impatient. In the next room Granny lay ill and under the day and night care of a doctor and I knew that I would be punished if I did not obey. I crossed restlessly to the window and pushed back the long fluffy white curtains--which I had been forbidden to touch-and looked yearningly out into the empty street. I was dreaming of running and playing and shouting, but the vivid image of Granny's old, white, wrinkled, grim face, framed by a halo of tumbling black hair, lying upon a huge feather pillow, made me afraid.

The house was quiet. Behind me my brother--a year younger than I--was playing placidly upon the floor with a toy. A bird wheeled past the window and I greeted it with a glad shout.

"You better hush," my brother said.

"You shut up," I said.

My mother stepped briskly into the room and closed the door behind her. She came to me and shook her finger in my face.

"You stop that yelling, you hear?" she whispered. "You know Granny's sick and you better keep quiet!"

I hung my head and sulked. She left and I ached with boredom.

"I told you so," my brother gloated.

"You shut up," I told him again.

I wandered listlessly about the room, trying to think of something to do, dreading the return of my mother, resentful of being neglected. The room held nothing of interest except the fire and finally I stood before the shimmering embers, fascinated by the quivering coals. An idea of a new kind of game grew and took root in my mind. Why not throw something into the fire and watch it burn? I looked about. There was only my picture book and MY mother would beat me if I burned that. Then what? I hunted around until I saw the broom leaning in a closet. That's it ... Who would bother about a few straws if I burned them? I pulled out the broom and tore out a batch of straws and tossed them into the fire and watched them smoke, turn black, blaze, and finally become white wisps of ghosts that vanished. Burning straws was a teasing kind of fun and I took more of them from the broom and cast them into the fire. My brother came to my side, his eyes drawn by the blazing straws.

"Don't do that," he said.

"How come?" I asked.

"You'll burn the whole broom," he said.

"You hush," I said.

"I'll tell," he said.

"And I'll hit you," I said.

My idea was growing, blooming. Now I was wondering just how the long fluffy white curtains would look if I lit a bunch of straws and held it under them. Would I try it? Sure. I pulled several straws from the broom and held them to the fire until they blazed; I rushed to the window and brought the flame in touch with the hems of the curtains. My brother shook his head.

"Naw," he said.

He spoke too late. Red circles were eating into the white cloth: then a flare of flames shot out. Startled, I backed away. The fire soared to the ceiling and I trembled with fright. Soon a sheet of saw her taut face peering under the edge of the house. She had found me! I held my breath and waited to hear her command me to come to her. Her face went away; no, she had not seen me huddled in the dark nook of the chimney. I tucked my head into my arms and my teeth chattered.

"Richard!"

The distress I sensed in her voice was as sharp and painful as the lash of a whip on my flesh.

"Richard! The house is on fire. Oh, find my child!"

Yes, the house was afire, but I was determined not to leave my place of safety. Finally I saw another face peering under the edge of the house; it was my father's. His eyes must have become accustomed to the shadows, for he was now pointing at me.

"There he is!"

"Naw!" I screamed.

"Come here, boy!"

"Naw!"

"The house is on fire!"

"Leave me 'lone!"

He crawled to me and caught hold of one of my legs. I hugged the edge of the brick chimney with all of my strength. My father yanked my leg and I clawed at the chimney harder.

"Come outta there, you little fool!"

"Turn me loose!"

I could not withstand the tugging at my leg and my fingers relaxed. It was over. I would be beaten. I did not care any more. I knew what was coming. He dragged me into the back yard and the instant his hand left me I jumped to my feet and broke into a wild run, trying to elude the people who surrounded me, heading for the street. I was caught before I had gone ten paces.

From that moment on things became tangled for me. Out of the weeping and the shouting and the wild talk, I learned that no one had died in the fire. My brother, it seemed, had finally overcome enough of his panic to warn my mother, but not before more than half the house had been destroyed.

I Could Thoroughly Relate
By A Customer
Like Richard Wright, I spent my teenage years reading only "classic" novels and therefore skipped over "Black Boy", which I assumed wouldn't be substantive enough for my tastes. Now that I've read it years later, I'm regretful that this stunning memoir wasn't a part of my consciousness when I was younger.
This is a story of racial dissonance-- and how horrifying it is to see the lengths that whites would go to to abuse and humiliate emancipated blacks!-- but it is also a story of a brilliant young man whose voice crosses racial bounds. I could identify with him completely, and I have little patience with those reviewers who've described him as "whiny" or "negative" or "hateful." I know what it feels like to grow up in a rural town and have people try to break you for having aspirations. I know what it's like to "feel and cultivate feelings" while others strive for "the trivial material prizes of American life," and I know that justifiable distrustfulness and resentment are not to be confused with hate. Most importantly, I know what it feels like to try to escape one's oppressive roots. The pain in this story was so real for me that I cried my way through many, many passages.
"Black Boy" should come as a revelation to black persons, white persons (like myself), and anyone who has ever hungered for their life to mean something more.

A Classic That Must be Read
By Dera R Williams
In my quest to either reread or read the first time some of the timeless classics by African American writers this year, I tried to avoid reading this one. I just wasn't up to reading about another downtrodden, poverty-stricken, living in the ghetto story. But it is more than that. This masterpiece is a commentary on a way of life in the early part of the 1900s, a life that many African Americans endured and survived coming through victorious.
Richard Wright recalls his poverty-stricken childhood, abandoned by a father, and physically abused and misunderstood by the adults in his life. Uncomfortable among his own people, he didn't fit in with the lifestyle of the blacks in his life nor could he abide the Jim Crow shuffling he had to do with whites. He found he could not compromise his values and knew he had to leave the south. The poverty was startling yet he chose to go back to live with his mother and grandmother when he could have stayed with an uncle where there was plenty of food.
With only an nine grade education, he was self-taught, reading and disciplining himself to pursue what he wanted most, to write. And write he did. He wrote stories and had them published when he was still in school and when he moved to Chicago he wrote for the Communist Party. With the Party, Wright thought he had found his niche, but again, he was the odd man out never conforming to their ideals.
As I read I kept saying, this is enough already. The poverty, the abuse, the Jim Crow and racism was a wearing me down. But this was a man who rose above his circumstances to have a life that was worth pursuing and living. I am intrigued by this man and his life and look forward to reading his most recent biography.

Autobiography
By Jeffrey Leach
Richard Wright is considered by many to be one of the premier Black American writers of the 20th century. He wrote a long string of books and essays before his death in 1960. Wright even wrote thousands of haiku poems and some plays. His best-known novel is probably "Native Son," a novel that takes a close look at Black America and it's relation to the penal system. Wright overcame huge obstacles to take a place among the great writers of his day, although I suspect he is more appreciated these days, when minority writers are all the rage. This book, aptly subtitled "American Hunger," is Wright's account of his tumultuous upbringing in the Jim Crow American South and his subsequent exodus to Chicago. The "Hunger" refers to both a physical hunger of poverty and a mental hunger for knowledge.
Most of the book concentrates on Wright's troubled childhood. His father abandoned the family at a young age, and for most of his youth Wright was bandied about amongst his frail mother, his psycho-religious grandmother, and a string of uncles and aunts. Wright rarely attended school, and when he did, he almost never stayed for more than two years in a row. His main occupation was trying to find work to feed his family and save for his trip to the North. Along the way Wright gives us many interesting stories about his youth and about the American South. Wright drank liquor heavily before he was seven, lived in a whorehouse, and even spent time in an orphanage. Despite all of these obstacles, Wright still managed to teach himself how to read and write. He was reading Sinclair Lewis and Theodore Dreiser in a time when to do so could spell disaster for a
Black man. His accounts of the discrimination he encountered while working in the South are pretty disturbing. Wright was threatened with bodily injury, pitted against his fellow Blacks, and forced to run errands for White workers during his lunch hour. Wright really brings home the dehumanization that a system like Jim Crow brings about. Wright himself had a tough time staying out of trouble because it was difficult for him to play "step `n fetchit." Whites seemed to sense his intelligence and most felt threatened by his mental faculties.
Wright left the South behind and headed North to what he felt would be a better life. It was, to some extent. It was easier to find work, although prejudice still followed him. Be sure and read about his job at the laboratory. It's a hoot! I can sympathize with him about people stepping on floors while they're being mopped. I've gone through that and felt the same rage Wright did. It was also in the North that Wright began his long dalliance with the Communist Party. This is the best part of the book, in my humble opinion. Wright candidly reveals the failings of Communism. According to Wright, the Communist party spent more time on internal bickering than trying to bring about revolution. There's even an incident where a certified lunatic ends up in a high position in a pro-Communist group. Wright himself suffered endless character assassination because he was an "intellectual," a big no-no in pro-Stalinist Communism. In short, Wright shows us that Communism, when taken from the ideal to reality, is a huge sham.
The biggest problem with this book is that it just seems to end with little fanfare. I would have been interested in hearing about Wright's trips to Europe and his stay in France. Still, this is an adequate book that gives a perspective that is often overlooked. I suspect that Wright would not be very impressed with the ghetto culture of today's world. Wright believed that Blacks have to lift themselves up and get out of poverty. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would not be friends of Richard Wright. Overall, this book is well written and contains interesting anecdotes. Recommended.
