He knows more about the formation and removal of burrs than anyone else.He has identified at least 100 deburring processes, 57 of which are commonly used. LaRoux earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Kansas University and his Master of Science in Manufacturing Engineering from Utah State University. Hitler started out in PR. He was an army propagandist. When the war was over and he found himself back in civilian life, he joined a small labor party as communications director. He soon ousted the founder and created an incident in Munich that led to a sensational trial. This made him a national politician and celebrity. He devoted two chapters of Mein Kampf to the importance of propaganda. He developed the truck-mounted loudspeaker to publicize speeches and martial music. He was constantly on the radio. He invented quasi-religious ceremonies like the entrance of the flagbearers. The endless repetition of simple and simplistic slogans cemented his party’s control of mindset. He admired the British propaganda machine, claiming it was responsible for victory over Germany in WWI. Under Hitler, Germany became enamored of Madison Avenue, and applied its lessons. Selling Hitler is a master class in brand marketing.

The Nazis controlled all communication. When Hitler made a speech, everyone had to place speakers in the streets so all would hear him. The party bought a film studio and produced newsreels to suit, as well as feature films that reminded viewers of the greatness that was Germany, the traditions and the myths that built a nation. In addition to radio, newspaper, film and public spectacles, Hitler actively spread rumors in whisper campaigns. Like internet “facts” today, Nazi propaganda, repeated constantly, soon became truths. “The idea was not to brainwash, but to show that the great mass of Germans believed” – and so should you. Everyone was to be on message, all the time. It was as high pressure and comprehensive a marketing campaign as was ever implemented.

Symbolism was the default mode of Nazi terminology. Everything was measured for its symbolic possibilities. To the point where roofs had to be pitched because flat roofs were Middle Eastern and therefore Jewish. The word fanatic became the highest term of approval. Absolutely everything was meant to persuade. From architecture to ceremonies, from word choice to myths, from symbols to sounds, everything had to add value to the Nazi brand. Hitler himself rotated the swastika to give it dynamism (moving upwards towards the right). Every public space was an opportunity for a symbolic message, carved in stone, draped in a flag or mounted with a statue.

So when Hitler announced it was Poland that invaded Germany, everyone believed it. There was no other credible source. During the war, the propaganda machine simply attributed German atrocities to the victims, making local Germans the true victims of Polish, British or French horrors. Everyone bought it.

O’Shaughnessy’s book is as thorough and complete as it could possibly be. He examines every aspect of language, custom, dress, myths, media, words, phrases and scapegoats. He acknowledges that Hitler actually invented none of it. All of these tactics have been employed before (and since). But Hitler pulled it all together, and with Goebbels as his tool, implemented ubiquitously.

There is a great deal of space given to Jews as scapegoats, but even Hitler admitted that if there were no Jews, he would have had to invent them. There was actually risk that if he did manage to eliminate all Jews, he would lose mindshare. It was that central to distracting Germans, and he knew it. In an interesting side note, Alexis de Tocqueville warned that idiotic notions of race superiority and social Darwinism would play only too well in Germany. This was the 1850s, when the word Aryan got transferred from the name of a language to the name of a (nonexistent) race. Germans already had a reputation for being suggestible to such myths.

History Repeats Itself

Mr. O'Shaughnessy states his premise in his introduction. Propaganda was the lifeblood pumped from the heart of the National Socialist Workers Party. He then corroborates his position with an exhaustive and admirably documented examination of the strategy and tactics brought to bear in each stage of the Nazi party's existence: birth, coming of age, dominance and death throes.

None of the bogus theories trumpeted by Hitler were original. Everything was borrowed. Attribution was distorted and specious yet all through the early years up to Stalingrad, Hitler and his acolytes were able to convince Germans that what they wanted to believe was what he was giving them. Even after Hitler's suicide, half of the German people believed in him.

Ancient history? Mass rallies, the draw of entertainment, simplicity of language and sloganeering, sky-is-falling rhetoric, press and other media manipulation, rumor and innuendo offered to a part of society that is searching for international respect and vindication, we witness it in our own time. The enemy is at our doorstep. True, the media are more sophisticated, but the elements of propaganda remain the same.

Apocalyspe Now - Apparently Not!

Some events happened to me in 1977 that made me feel very confident that many really big changes were going to happen, and I was certain that the changes would start happening in about 1995, oddly enough about the time of this book's publication. The things that happened to me were not in any way the same as what happened to Vance Davis and the "Gulf Breeze 6," yet reading parts of this book, especially the predictions of apocalypse, reminded me of visions I had as well as intuitions i.e, "things are so messed up in this world, it just can't go on the way it is!"
Only it's 2001 as I write this review, and from my point of view none of the big changes happened, and thus while I liked "Unbroken Promises," I was soured by the parts that predict apocalypse and have, at least to this date, been proven wrong over and over. Personally I also don't react very favorably when dire predictions are made and then the "prophet" claims that they didn't come to pass because people "woke up," or whatever excuse can be thought of.
"Unbroken Promises" is first of all Mr. Davis's autobiography. He is a psychic trained in Silva Mind Control who eventually goes to work for the NSA. Davis, who is also keenly interested in consciousness expansion, learns how to go into deep meditative states, to the point of meeting spirit guides, such as Kia, who claims to be from a planet forty-five light years away. Yet Mr. Davis also is a religious, or better-stated, spiritual man, and he repeatedly asks Jesus for help in all his endeavors. To some having contact with aliens while believing in Christ might seem strange!
The real story of "Unbroken Promises" occurs during the summer of 1990, when Davis and 5 other mililtary personnel begin to dabble in the paranormal while stationed in Germany, eventually to the point of communicating with spirits through an Ouija board. They have 7 sessions with these spirits. At first there isn't a totally religious overtone, but quickly more spirits come through, and almost all of these spirits use the names of apostles of Jesus. The messages they give are a mixture of good ol' Biblical global apocalypse, a la the Book of Revelations, along with specific directions to the 6 humans to leave their posts and return to America, to help with the "big changes" that are imminent. They are told not only the approximate date to go AWOL, but also, repeatedly, that they will be protected from danger.
So the 6 do go AWOL, ending up in Gulf Breeze, FL. Unfortunately they are caught, and initially are treated like hardened criminals who have engaged in espionage. After about 3 weeks of imprisonment, during which the story becomes a public scandal, they are not only released, but almost unbelievably are given a choice - they can actually remain in the military or receive honorable discharges (they of course choose the latter)! In short, all the predictions that the spirit guides make concerning their welfare come true (assuming none are omitted, and I question that). We are told implicitly and explicitly that in fact the 6 do have "friends in high places," and one of the important points made in the book is that the US govt. is divided into "good" and "bad" factions.
What is a bit "unkosher" about the book is the claim by the authors (mostly via the channeling from the Ouija board) that Mr. Davis and
company are going to play a very important in the "awakening" of humanity during the aforementioned apocalyse, the apocalyse that in my view still shows little indication of happening. And indeed almost all of the really dire events listed towards the end of the book, such as riots in many major cities, the widespread institution of martial law, and particularly the coming of the Peacemaker/anti-Christ, have simply not come to pass, which is why I question whether Mr. Davis supplies a complete list of predictions concerning his group going AWOL.
Still, "Unbroken Promises" is surely an intriguing book to read and ponder, and I have no doubt about Mr. Davis's sincerity. I also enjoyed the inclusion of the accounts of 3 females who were involved in the arrest of the Gulf Breeze 6 (one who had gone AWOL, plus 2 friends, one of whom Mr. Davis had seen in a dream 10 years before and became his wife!). The final part of the book are the documents that back up what was written about the imprisonment and release of the 6.

STILL LAUGHING!!!

I never thought I'd actually see the day that this load of garbage actually found a publisher!!! I was stationed with these chowder-heads and even went to training in Pensacola with most of them. Vance, while a friendly guy, was never considered anything CLOSE to being a soldier.... noted throughout the unit for being a compulsive liar. For example, he told me several times that he had been on the Olympic Baseball Team, and had written a smash hit song for late-80's popster Aldo Nova. I have NO idea how this guy ever got a security clearance higher than Confidential. He had recently bought an East German Army uniform that fit him, so when this happened, many of us in the unit thought that they had gone over The Wall - it would have been the kind of thing Vance would do... then he would have driven the E. Germans nuts and gotten sent back with a fat lip! Huckstedt and the other young guys were good fellas, I think they just got caught up in something where they felt important and were led on by older soldiers whom they wanted acceptance from. Because of these lunatics, we had constant midnight inspections (they had apparently left word in a letter that others would be joining them), and had "End of The World" parties annually on the day that they had predicted The End would be for several years afterward. Trust me...if higher intelligence from The Great Beyond was looking for someone on Earth to talk to and save, it would have been a group far less pitiful and goofy. The leaders of this thing misled and abused the trust of younger soldiers who had promising futures - and they betrayed their country and uniform. I'm still laughing, with a sad smile. Vance D.... where are you now, tusker?

Concise, scientifically rigorous, and part of a coherent series

There are a million of these kinds of books, so it was hard to settle on just one. To narrow the field, I essentially eliminated any books that were just by some random person. Having a wacky personality or a bold new insight into childhood development may be good for spicing up an episode of Dr. Oz, but I prefer a book that has the backing of some kind of medical institution. I was pretty sure that meant a book from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Sounds good, right?

My big problem with the AAP books was that there were just too many of them. A book on "taking your baby home." A book on his first month. A book on his first year. A book on his first five years. A book on his third Tuesday through his ninth winter solstice. All very fine books, judging by reviews, but the whole collected seemed a bit too incoherent to me. And did I really need an encyclopedia's worth of literature to get this kid through his first year?

Then there's this book. A measly handful of reviews, which is odd, considering it's the follow up to the well-reviewed Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy. That was our pregnancy book of choice, and we thought it was great. So we went for it, and I'm happy to say that this book is just as great.

To me, the most important thing about this book is that it's got balance. It's readable, with enough humor to keep you interested, but not so much as to be cloying and false. It's not a roller coaster of hilarity written in the style of a home appliance manual or a midcentury scouting guidebook, but there's a good joke here and there. And it steers you in the right direction, laying out the pros and cons of each decision you need to make, but it doesn't get preachy. There's no agenda other than what's best for mother and child. Maybe best of all, though, is that it's concise without being cursory. It's got almost everything we've needed to know so far -- we haven't really been surprised by a recommendation from the pediatrician yet -- but doesn't ramble.

All in all, a fantastic book. I can't imagine how they'd improve it.

Sensible, scientific and not at all preachy

Most baby books are filled with cutesy emotional stories and thinly veiled judgments, but this one just presents the facts and recognizes that everyone's baby, and everyone's circumstances are different. For a person with a logic-based brain, this is a great resource without all the annoying emotional filler.

Do not buy for kindle

This review is for the kindle version of the book, which is terrible. I was hoping to use this book as a reference that I could look at while taking care of my baby, or when questions came up. The kindle version of this book does not allow for quickly jumping between chapters or topics, the "go to" option only shows the first three chapters, and the remaining 27 or so are impossible to jump to. This essentially makes the ebook useless to me.
I am sure there is a lot of good information in this book, I found the mayo clinic guide too a healthy pregnancy (which I bought in paperback) extremely useful, and I assume the physical version of this book would be the same.

All about the action

The basic premise of the book is that Earth is only one of many, many worlds 'seeded' by an alien race which originated in another dimension. Eleven beings - no, twelve - were exiled because they had created the twelfth. The twelfth was the creature called Bane. Holo does an excellent job of beginning the book with action, threading his world-building in and around that action and slowly unfolding it.

Discard all your puny notions of the laws of physics, and just enjoy the almost cinematic descriptions of machines and men melded into seraphim, the protectors of humanity and their titanic clashes with the ironically bureaucratic Fallen. In a universe where not one, but two 'spare' planets have been set into orbit around Earth (and one leaves abruptly) without any mention of that mass affecting the Earth, it is not a surprise to learn of mental powers that can extend to... but that's a spoiler.

This isn't a story about the characters, who remain elusively aloof from the reader. Although they are well-enough described, I was never quite able to connect with them emotionally. The dialogue is lacking flavor, but that's not why you read books like this. This one is a fun tour de force of chaos sword battles, hand-to-hand Mecha combat, and the dead world hiding terrible secrets at the center of it all. If you enjoyed Saberhagen's Berserker series, this may appeal to you.

Gundam meets Neon Evangelion in this clash of titanic mecha. The overall story was strong and the fighting was intense. The ending left me wanting to see more of this expanded universe. The dangers are not over, but I fear they are only beginning for our heroes. Why not four stars? I wanted more character development and await the next book of this space opera. Till then...

This is the first book of Jacob's that I've read and it feels like a love letter to the mecha space genre. If you're a fan of anime and wonder what a novel written the same way would be like, this is the book. The world building has a nice touch where some anachronisms (like having a cook) are highlighted. Looking forward to finishing the third book in the Seraphim Revival series soon.
