I teach at a community college and have used the 3rd edition quite happily. The 4th edition is a terrible disappointment. All of the stories that my students enjoyed have been removed and those that have replaced them are of little interest to them. In the 3rd edition, story 1 and story 2 relate to each other and one leads into the next to help with comprehension, give discussion points and generally help students to hone their reading skills. My students are refugees and immigrants-they are interested in stories about being in America, being immigrants, food, and news. All of the stories relating to these subjects were removed and replaced with bland, uninteresting stories about savants, cell phones, MOOCs and other subjects that are of little worth to them. I am sorry that I am required to use it and don't recommend it at all. Oh yes, I teach a 14 week class. Where I had 10 units, now I have only 8. Thanks guys.
The online component is very difficult to evaluate for instructors and I have found little value for my students.
